Advantages: Feel Good film, Superb acting

Disadvantages: Relistic situation?

As a Mother of sons something touched me about the plight of our Billy (Jamie Bell)- his Mum - she had passed away and throughout the film the undertones of how much he needed her was obvious.

Eleven years old living in a masculine household dominated by the his brother and Father who are busy with their fight as coal miners on strike, with only his slightly dotty Grandmother to share his unspoken dreams with. His best friend has a liking for girls dresses after school. Not exactly a stable chidhood for Billy, but was it the norm?

Mrs Wilkinson's (Julie WAlters)becomes his aly in his desperation to dance, being one of the only other female influences in his life realises his talent. There are several touching moments with the two of them. I'm not sure about the upbeat dance routine between the two of them.

With his family none the wiser to his aspirations Billy continues to practice in secret, but you know he is going to be found out. Surely in a village atmostphere where everyone knows everybody elses business the boy that takes ballet classes is going to be talk of the town?

So his secret is out. His Father (Gary Lewis) takes centre stage, his emotions and sudden realisation that Billy has a talent, Billy has a life and something that he never had - a dream - is portrayed powerfully. The sacrifices and changes he makes are against everything he lived and thought.

The final scene is brilliant, bringing the whole film together, although some say they would have liked to have seen the whole thing...
