The film is a story about a group of raw recruits in the 2nd World War, while they're at boot camp with their insane drill sergeant. Matthew Broderick plays the hero of the piece, where he's picked on by the drill sergeant, which gets him in severe trouble with the rest of his platoon. But of course it all comes good, after lots of trouble, but hey don't end up having to go to war as it's all over soon afterwards. Christopher Walken plays the insane drill sergeant, and is his normal brilliant self, top notch as always. The rest of the cast are pretty good too! I recently brought a copy of this video - I hadn't seen it since it was in the Cinema and I wanted to recapture my teens. I like the writing of Neil Simon (Barefoot in the Park, the Odd Couple etc)and this supposedly semi-autobiographical account of Simon's days in the army is no exception.
