Advantages: Popcorn vampire action fun

Disadvantages: Not up to the other two films

The Blade trilogy for me is a good example of how dooyoo can work well for the member. If you look for film reviews online they are often poorly written, usually bias and never in order. Dooyoo, of course, list the best reviews at the top and the worst ones never to be seen again. Blade is the sort of film you need dooyoo for as who would have thought a decent action movie could be made about Vampires? But I started reading it up on it here back then and the write ups were really positive - and this with a movie with Luke Goss from Bros in it (he was very good though)! But you guys were right and I had rented my first vampire action flick, completing the trilogy with Blade Trinity some seven years later when it was on TV last week. I didn't rent when it came out (2005) because you guys didn't like it as much as the other two. You were right. But it's still ok.

-The Plot-

'Blade' (Snipes) ,a half breed vampire that can survive out in the sun with just shades and the nattiest black leather get up possible, is holed up in his lair with his trusted friend 'Whistler' (Kris Kristofferson), both licking their wounds after surviving the first two films and battles with the various bad vampire incarnations.

After an opening explosive scene-setting sequence to show Blade is still up to some serious vampire ass kicking, the master swordsman is soon in a pickle when he is tricked into killing a human, a big no no for good vampires on Earth, all this caught on CCTV and so the FBI wanting a word in his ear, not knowing he's a vampire of course. Blade has super powers of sorts but he and Whistler are soon over-run and in the FBI detention centre. But Blade won't be going to court any day soon though as someone has done a deal with the bad vampire clan to hand him over for their unique interrogation techniques to get their revenge on Blade.

So enter the ones calling themselves the 'Vermillion', ex vampires but tough and cool enough to help bust Blade out of prison, they having their own little lair full of top of the range vampire killing kit. But once free Blade and his new friends have another problem, the bad vampires headed by Danica Talos (Parker Posey) having called in the dark lord himself, 'Drake' (Dominic Purcell), the biggest and strongest vampire of the lot awoken from his thousand year sleep in the wilds, Danica's mission to let the vampires stalk the earth by sunlight and become 'Daywalkers', and so humans once again their lunch, the vampires 'Final Solution'.

-The Conclusion-

In 2005, when this was released, Wesley Snipes was having major problems with unpaid taxes to the IRS (Inland Revenue Service) in the US and so no choice but to make this movie after the original success of the first two films in the 1990s some 6 years back, presumably not giving enough of that fee to the said taxman when he was loaded from those excellent cult movies gross take. Blade Trinity is clearly the worst of the three but it still works and his fee was big, enough style and cool over substance to make this work for the younger vampire obsessed market and older renters too. Snipes is just one cool dude up on the big screen and made for this role whilst Jessica Beil with her bow and arrow and tight fitting cat suit keep things slick and seductive enough for this to hold up and so justify the trilogy completion. Where it's let down some is eye-candy Ryan Reynolds as Beils fellow vampire slayer, seriously over-acting and posing to the point of annoyance. He put on 25 Lbs of muscle for the role to improve his pecks and I'm sure one or two dooyooers who will enjoy the six-pack on show rather than his acting skills, Reynolds taken every opportunity to show his handwork, but a plonker in the film, as cringingly bad as Ben Affleck at times in his films.

The actors are cynically dressed for the video game of the film from the off with each good and bad vampire having a 'skill'. Beil was so good at her archery that she was rather too accurate when asked to shoot at the expensive camera, hitting it dead centre from 50 years out causing a $300,000 wipe out of the productions best mobile unit.

For some reason not explored in the graphic novels of Blade, and indeed most of these superhero films, vampires are always really good at Kung Fu, as are their enemies. I always find that bit odd. But it's all good fun and the action in perfect tempo with the groovy techno soundtrack and hip street cool dialogue, the film moving along nicely with a surprisingly competent approach from director David S Goyer. Well the previous film was directed by none other than Guillermo Del Torro so I suppose they had to keep up quality control to some level.
