Advantages: Some very funny bits, good story, great acting
Disadvantages: Daft at times
Jimmy MacElroy plays a very feminine ice dancer who was orphaned as a young child and raised by a millionaire who constantly pushed him to do his best. He is excellent at ice dancing but his rival is always chasing him. Chazz Michael Michaels is the opposite of Jimmy and is a rough rugged dancer who improvised and is loved by the ladies as he is always dirty dancing in his routines.
The pair are completing in the latest competition when the results come through and they have tied for the gold medal. Things go wrong for the skaters as they are standing on the winners podium and they start fighting. As a result of their behaviour they both get life time banns from skating in competitions. Luckily for Jimmy 3 years after the ban his stalker has some good news for him. He is able to skate again as long as it is not in the same category as he was when he got his ban.
Jimmy and Chazz are soon on the look out for partners for the latest competition where they hope to win the gold but will they both be able to find a partner and train them in time or are they about to make skating history????
I didn't know what to expect from this film. I had picked it up several times before but always put it back down. I am so glad that I finally made the plunge and bought it. I think the deciding factor for me was that it starred Will Ferrell and all the other films I have seen him are I really enjoyed, this film was no exception.
Will Ferrell played the role of Chazz and he was brilliant. He managed to put so much into the character, he showed so many different sides to him and I loved how he though he was God's gift to women, this did make for some great laughs. Jon Heder played the role of Jimmy and I have to say he is not a known actor to me but this aside I thought he did a good job and worked very well with Ferrell. He came across as very feminine and naive and I think that as this was the complete opposite of Ferrell's character they really did play off each other very well.
There were a lot of supporting actors and actresses in the film and I enjoyed all of them. There were a few which were meant to not be liked and I think they all did great jobs in their roles and did manage to bring a little bit of depth to the storyline.
The storyline was good although a little predictable. I liked how it was based around ice skating as I have not seen a film like this before. I think the two main actors really did manage to make the most from the script and they bough a lot of humour to the film. Not all of the jokes were spoken ones, there was a lot of funny incidents which happened and at times both me a hubby did laugh out loud.
The costumes in the film were great and very fun. I think it took a lot of guts for Ferrell to wear the skin tight Lycra as he is not the slimmest man going but he really did look good. There were lots of sequins to be seen and I enjoyed seeing the character of Jimmy being made to look more like a woman with his very feminine outfits.
The music throughout the film was very mixed, we had on one hand the classical music which jimmy would be dancing to and then the rock music which Chazz would dance too. I did enjoy the addition of Aero smith's 'Don't Want to Miss a Thing' as this was my wedding song and I always enjoy hearing it.
The DVD which we have does contain some bonus material which includes:-
Deleted Scenes
Gag Reel
Alternate Takes
Behind-the-Scenes Featurette
And Much More!
I am not a fan of bonus material so I have not taken the time to watch these so I cannot make comment on them.
The running time of this film is 89 minutes and I found this to be a great length and the certificate is a 12 as there are some moderate sex references and some slapstick violence. This DVD is currently available for just £3 in Tesco which I felt to be a bargain price.
Overall I do recommend this film as it contains some great actors, has a great storyline and it is very funny.
Summary: Chazz and Jimmy get banned from solo skating but find a loophole with some funny consequences
