Advantages: Depp, Liotta, Demmes direction

Disadvantages: Biased ?

Blow tells the true story of Massachusetts born George Jung (Johnny Depp), a small town high school football player drawn to the excitement of 1960's California for college, which led to his eventual demise into the world of drug dealing, and his involvement in the introduction of cocaine to the United States.

Depp beautifully portrays the character of Jung, fully immersing himself in all aspects. Those familiar with the real Jung claim that the voiceovers are also frighteningly similar. Depp met with Jung on several occasions to explore his true character. Thus demostrating the care Depp takes in researching his roles, and ensuring an optimum performance. This is why Depp shines throughout the film and gives it the recognition that it deserves. Stunning performances can also be seen from Franka Potente and Ray Liotta. Liotta plays the role of Depps father spanning 30 years. His intensity reflects the bond intended to be evident between Jung and his father, revelealing director Ted Demmes true desired theme for the film, family, and specifically parental relationships. The closeness and unconditional love displayed between Depp and Liotta is intended to reflect the passion Jung has for his own child, Kristina.

Demme initially did not see Jungs story as appropriate to translate to the big screen. After several meetings with Jung, Demme recognised the pain he felt in his poor relation with his daughter, which resulted from his misdemeanors, and his eventual conviction. Demme wants audiences to leave the film with a feeling of pity for Jung who mourns for his absent daughter.

However, Demme overplayed the pity factor portraying at times what seems a biased and one-sided story. It is evident that neither Mirtha (Jungs wife) or Kristina were consulted in the writing of the screen play. Mirtha is portrayed as a selfish, inconsiderate crack-fiend and a bad mother. This seems to be an exaggerated portrayal, for the sake of Kristina, lets hop
e it was an exaggerated portrayal.

Blow is an enjoyable film which captures the audience through the turbulence and emotion.

Actually, Kristina & Mirtha Jung were consulted on this film. You can read about this on this page: http://www.popmatters.com /film/interviews/demme-te d.html In fact, Kristina had a small part as a court clerk but the scene was cut. You can even look her up on imdb.com Mirtha said the reason she wanted to get involved was because she wanted to show people, young girls in particular, that the lifestyle that you think you're going to get from being around all of those drugs/money is not real. Regardless of all of this, as far as I'm aware, neither have visited George yet.
