Advantages: Plot , Acting , Scenery
Disadvantages: Not Many!
I have wanted to see the movie Blue Crush ever since it came out in the cinemas way back in 2003 when I was twelve years old! However six years later , which brings us to the year of 2009 and me to the age of eighteen , browsing through the DVD's on sale in my local Wilkinson's , it dawned on me that after all this time of wanting to see this movie , I still hadn't gone to the actual effort of watching it. So I promised myself there and then that this time I WAS going to watch this film , and so I picked up a copy of the DVD and took it to the counter.
On the same day , i was looking forward to a quite night in with a DVD , and it was then that i decided to watch the DVD. Also the same day , I had just booked my holiday for next year - a two week cruise and so I was in a bit of a 'sun , sea and sand' mood , so this film was perfect for me as I was excited about my holiday and hitting the beach.
Blue Crush is a romantic drama film released in April 2003. It is an American film and stars Kate Bosworth (Orlando Bloom's ex!). Running time of this movie is one hundred and four minutes ( Just under two hours).
Anne Marie is works as a maid at a local hotel along with her two best friends Eden and Lena. Her mother ran away to Las Vegas with her boyfriend and so Anne Marie and her friends help bring up her younger sister. However , the girls are serious about surfing - nothing will come between themselves and their surfboards. So what will happen when the girls enter an all-male surfing contest ? Is it just another competition or will it change their lives forever ? Watch Blue Crush to find out!
First of all I'd like to say , although I'd waited six years to see this movie , it was definitely worth it in the end. Watching it made me even more excited towards my holiday (even if it is a few months away!).
I am not interested in surfing , never have been , although there was something about this movie that made me think , 'actually , it does look like fun!'. I was extremely impressed with the filming , especially the surfing scenes , I felt like I was actually surfing in the sea! It was very real to life! I also enjoyed seeing the beautiful scenery in the film. The beach looked so perfect!
My favourite character in the movie , was the main character , Anne Marie played by Kate Bosworth. I liked how this wasn't like any other teen movie where the characters are just 'people who say their lines'. With this movie , I felt like I really knew Anne Marie and as though I was the fourth member of the group. The script allowed the viewers to see deep down into the character and I found Anne Marie to be a very likeable character , as she was strong minded and had such great determination. I liked how the character was made true to life and not a 'successful , rich , young girl with a good job kind of character which you find in a lot of films these days. I thought Kate Bosworth was the perfect choice for the role - She made the character appear so believable. I couldn't imagine the role been played by any other actress , she definitely made it her own!
This movie left me with a positive attitude! I love 'feel good' films which make you feel on top of the world and as if you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it. I think it teaches us that if you have a chance , grab it with both hands and live life to the max!
The only criticism I do have regarding this film is the fact that Anne Marie's reason for having so much determination for the sport she loved was to provide a better life for her sister. Beings as her sister was one of her main focuses , I was disappointed that as a viewer , we didn't get to see what eventually happened to her sister , which leaves the viewer guessing and feeling that the ending didn't provide enough 'information'. However this wasn't enough to put me off the film.
Whilst watching Blue Crush , I enjoyed listening to the different songs playing throughout the scenes! They definitely added to the atmosphere , especially in the competitive scenes!
I think Blue Crush is a perfect 'ingredient' for a girlie summer sleep over! It really makes you want to hit the beach. I don't think it's necessary to have to be into surfing to enjoy this movie. I have never took an interest in the sport , however combined with a fantastic storyline , I was able to enjoy this movie and the amount of surfing scenes featured certainly weren't enough to put me off the film. In fact , I found the surfing scenes to be quite exciting actually!
I would definitely recommend this movie!
