Blue Velvet is a mystery and thriller released in year 1986. Film was directed by David Lynch and he also wrote the screenplay of the movie. Film was nominated for academy awards in best direction category. This is a story of college student who find severed human ear and try to investigate on this case with detective's daughter.

Star Cast:

Kyle MacLachlan portrays Jeffrey Beaumont.
Laura Dern plays a role of Sandy Williams.
Isabella Rossellini portrays Dorothy Vallens.
Dennis Hooper plays a role of Frank Booth.

Plot Summary:

Jeffrey Beaumont is a college student and his father suffers from stroke. He takes his father to hospital and while returning he finds a severed human ear. He reported this matter to Williams who is detective and father of his old friend Sandy. Sandy tells Jeffrey that she overhears her father and there may be a link with local singer Dorothy Vallens. With the help of Sandy he gets the key of Dorothy's house. He hides in her house and see that Frank arrives there. Frank kidnapped her son and husband. He said that he loves her. Jeffrey wants to help Dorothy and fall in love with her. In a bid to help her he gets into trouble. This is a great mystery movie so I don't want to spoil the ending. To reveal all the mysteries watch "Blue Velvet".

My Views and Perspective:

Plot and Storyline
Blue Velvet is one of the best movies I have ever seen. The movie is great mystery thriller and consists of strange imagination of writer but it's pretty easy to understand the story. The story is set in American town and is a ride of extreme torture and violence. The shocks and twists start from opening scene when Jeffrey finds the ear and remains throughout the film. When movie starts it seems that the story is pretty simple and just a mystery of an ear, lead actors are very childish and acting in a spy movie but as movie goes on characters start entering into disturbing world. The plot is based on 4-5 individuals and their lives. Every one has its dark side and this movie shows the dark side of those individuals. Story left a message of violence, sex and corruption that lies in America.

Direction
All the trademarks and hallmarks of Lynch are present in the movie and it is very different from other great movies of Lynch. He creates a strange humor and stunning scenes in movie. This movie is best movie of Lynch till date and he succeeds in grabbing the attention of the audience. First he creates the sense of normality and then as time passes he brings out the darkness. The darkness is not in monster or in devil but is in one man. There are many hidden messages in his direction. Like in scene when camera takes us under the ground or grass I think he wants to show us the worms hidden in the darkness. Watch the movie and try to figure out those hidden messages.

Characters and Performances
The lead actors play their roles perfectly. This is a starting of Laura and Kyle's careers and their roles are impressive. All characters of the movie are very interesting. Jeffrey looks childish sometimes but as his character changes you will see his dark side. He losses his innocence when he finds the human ear. You will love to see the changes of pace and situations of his character. The chemistry between Laura and Kyle is great. It reminds me the ending scene of film when both are looking at each other and questioning about the mysteries of life. Isabella is perfect and does a great job as Dorothy. Her character is very mysterious. Dennis Hooper as a villain actually steals a show. As a Frank he is addicted to drugs and he enters in the movie after one hour or so. After his entry the pace and tone is completely changed and I can say this is one of the scariest characters I have ever seen. His dialog delivery is just awesome and most of his dialogs are in abusive language but his dialogs make you crazy. I want to tell you the best scenes where his acting really shines. First when he takes Jeffrey on ride to the outskirts of the town and secondly the rape scene in Dorothy's apartment. His madness and psychotic scenes is added advantage of the film.

Cinematography and Soundtracks
The camerawork and cinematography is stunning. In whole film you can see use of great lighting effects and shades. Watch opening scene when Jeffrey's father seizing his neck and hits the grass, camera takes us under the ground and in snuggle of beetles. The soundtracks and background music is a triumph. Soundtracks were composed by Angelo Badalamenti. Background music is mix of classic and 60's pop. The title song can be heard many times and other songs are also nice. Overall the pace of background music is according to the story line and stylized violence. One of the memorable sequences is In Dreams sung by Dean Stockwell.

Conclusion:

This film is not just another thriller but shows the reality of world of violence, drugs use and torture. Movie shows us the world where we are living. There is no doubt that this movie is entertaining but this movie will make you think about your moral values. Movie can be revisited many times and can't be forgotten. This movie is a masterpiece and deserves a place in list of best classic movies.

Note:

Movie contains extreme violence, nude and sex scenes and abusive language. So this movie is only for adults and I advice you not to watch this movie with children.

This is a brilliant and very weird, disturbing and memorable film, and Dennis Hopper's role in this is certainly one of his best, if not the best - really scary and too convincing! Great review.
