Why are there people like Frank in the world? A hard hitting film (Blue Velvet (DVD))

Advantages: Great, disturbing, beautiful - accessible to not only Lynch fans Disadvantages: Maybe think twice before recommending it to your grandmother Directed by David Lynch, 'Blue Velvet' remains an oft-quoted ("Pabst Blue Ribbon!") cult classic, portraying a familiar theme for Lynch which is the 'strange world' that we live in and both the darkness and the light that resides here with us, despite the apparent banality of our everyday lives. Lynch says he was inspired to make this films based upon a vision of bright red lips and Bobby Vinton's version of the song, 'Blue Velvet', and everything followed from there. Isabella Rossellini (playing Dorothy Vallens) provides the red lips and is stunningly beautiful as the sad nightclub singer who is burdened with an unimaginable reality. The scene where Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper) arrives at Dorothy's apartment (It's daddy, you shithead) is a total shock to the system until you realise you have watched the whole scene with your mouth open. Lynch leaves the explanation for Frank's state of mind up to our own imagination just to make the whole episode even more disturbing, giving us mere hints with the sick things that Frank spits out as he sexually assaults her. A less surreal film than his later works and certainly accessible to those of you who are not particularly Lynch fans. My elderly mother watched it and her only comment was that Dennis Hopper is a very good actor! Summary: A great film that will mess you up in a good way |
