Advantages: Unique film; makes you really think

Disadvantages: The subject matter and violence may put some people off

If you're not looking for a film which will make you think, and think hard, then don't see this. Quite possibly one of the most disturbing films I have ever seen, it is at times brutally graphic and to the point, fully deserving its 18 certificate.

The film tells the story of Teena Brandon, a lesbian who wishes she were male. To this end she gets her cousin to transform her visually into one. Soon after, due to being in trouble with the police, she has to run to a new town and begins to live under her new guise - Brandon Teena. She meets new sets of friends and falls in love with a girl, all without ever revealing that she is in fact female. Slowly she comes to realise how intolerant her supposed friends would be if they ever found out her secret, and from this stems the rest of the film together with the truly shocking ending.

This is by no means an easy film to watch. By turns tragic, shocking, and very graphically violent, you will need to work hard to like this. But if you put effort into it then you will be richly rewarded with a quite unique film. Have an open mind.
