Released in 1992, Peter Jackons's slapstick horror comedy 'Braindead' is generally considered to be one of the goriest films ever made. The story begins with a rare 'Sumatran Rat Monkey' that bites main protagonist Lionel Cosgrove (Timothy Balme)'s authoritarian mother when she gets too close to it at the local zoo, at which point she slowly turns into a flesh-hungry zombie. She escapes and goes on to murder the towns other inhabitants, all of whom return as zombies themselves, leading to a comiedic farce as Lionel tries to keep them all hidden away in his basement.

Unfortunately his uncle Les chooses this moment to turn up uninvited for a housewarming party at Lionel's home along with with dozens of guests. Predictably, this results in a massive gore-drenched zombie outbreak, resulting in plenty of ridiculously over the top graphic imagery of dismemberment, disembowelment and lots of arterial sprays of blood as the party guests are torn apart by the marauding horde of zombies.

Despite being incredibly intense the film never forgets that its a comedy, and is full of gloriously silly scenes, such as one in which a martial-arts priest roundhouse-kicks a zombie's head off in the local graveyard before proclaiming "I kick a*se for the lord!". The finale involves a hundred or so zombies and a lawnmower held upwards at waist height, the film making the Evil Dead look positively tame in comparison.

With great comedy performances and immensely entertaining over the top special effects, Braindead is a classic horror comedy but definitely not one for the more squeamish viewers out there!

Summary: A brilliant mix of over the top gore and daft comedy
