Advantages: Gore, avoids usual cliches
Disadvantages: Gore
I saw this movie on its initial theatrical release in the UK, back in the summer of '93. I haven't enjoyed a movie so much before or since. Braindead is a zombie film. People die, get up, kill more people, lose appendages, spray blood, etc etc. Here's what makes it better than most of it's kin: 1) It is set against reasonably atmospheric 1950s new zealand backdrop, and is therefore devoid of both irritating rock music, american teenagers and indeed most genre cliches. 2) The hero, Lionel, is a strangely likeable wally: the viewer actually cares what happens to him, therefore there is at least some dramatic tension. 3) There is a good level of ridiculous gore effects throughout the film. However, the budget has been largely held back for the final half-hour, probably the most ludicrous blood-bath yet filmed. 4) The director, Peter Jackson, is a man of great talent (his first effort was the similarly spirited Bad Taste and he went on to do Heavenly Creatures). This is a very 'niche' film, most mums and girlfriends won't approve. If gore happens to be your bag but you're disappointed by most of the straight-to-video out there, pick up a copy of this.
