Advantages: gore
Disadvantages: None
A poisionous 'rat monkey' is stolen from a remote Island the locals are none to happy but the two men after it manage to catch it and take it to a New Zealand zoo. In the town where the zoo is situated lives Lionel(Timothy Balme), he is a complete mothers boy and does everything for her. One day he is on his way to collect his shopping from Paquita's(Diana Peņalver) shop. Paquita is in to predictions of the future etc and believes that Lionel is the one for her so she tricks him into asking her to the zoo. Lionel's mother (Elizabeth Moody), however finds out about this and follows him. Whilst trying to hide from him she is bitten by the Monkey rat. She thinks nothing off it until the next day when she is ill. Some friends are coming over so Lionel helps her to get ready. Vera's skin starts to come off and she looks increasingly ill. Her bite from the monkey rat is infected and her ear falls off. Lionel calls for a doctor but Vera dies, but then she comes back as a flesh eating zombie and kills the nurse. Lionel locks them in the basement. Everybody gets increasingly worried about Lionel because he seems unable to accept the fact his mother is dead. What is really happening is that he is using animal tranquilisers to stop Vera coming back from the dead. Now it is up to Lionel to control the multiplying number of zombies in the basement before they infect more people. In Peter Jackson's pre Lord of the Ring days he made Bad Taste, a gore fest with aliens, Meet The Feebles, a gore/sex fest with puppets, Heavenly Creatures a serious film and The Frightners a cool film about a serial killer ghost and also Braindead, a kick ass blood soaked zombie film which has to be one of the goriest and funniest zombie flicks about. I first saw this before I was a fan of Peter Jackson, in fact I didn't know who he was and this was defintely the film that made me aware of and also love his work. The film at first seems a we
ird gory film about a mysterious caged animal and at first i wasn't that intrested but then the film got started and I was totally engrossed with every blood soaked minute of it. This has to be my favourite zombie film and also one of my favourite films of all time. Firstly the story is good and I didn't realise that is was going into zombie territory until Lionel's mother comes back from the dead. The script is hilarious, "I kick arse for the lord" and has many weird, funny characters from a kung fu priest to a man who thinks that what New Zealand needs is a lord. The direction is excellent and there are some interesting shots. The acting is also good but what made this film stand out is the gore. Lots and lots of gore, ever someone eat their own ear? ever seen a baby burst out of someones head? or killer intestines? well watch this film and you will have. I would defintely recommend this film to everyone.
