Advantages: funny and sad at the same time
Disadvantages: funny and sad at the same time
Brassed off is set in the fictitious South Yorkshire village of Grimley. It tells the sad tale of the demise of the coalfields in Yorkshire and the happy tale of the success of the colliery brass band, both at the same time. The acting in the film is of a good standard and captures the Yorkshire spirit well, although some of the accents are not spot on they are fairly good. The side of the story that follows the running down of the pits is reasonably true to life and captures the harsh realities of proud men loosing there jobs and the problems with family life that follow. The side of the story that follows the brass band is more light hearted and very funny at times, with snide quips and quick whited one liners. The strange thing about this film is even if you hate brass band music (I am not a great fan) you will find yourself tapping your feet along to the many songs that are played. The sad thing about the film is that Grimethorpe where the film was made is now an absolute testimony to what the story was trying to say. Loosing the pit has ripped the heart out of the village. Overall an excellent British film that never got the success it deserved just because it’s mainly about brass bands. Watch it you will laugh, you may cry but you will enjoy it.

- 17/08/00 Its like 'Up and Under' and 'Full Monty' (without the hype) - good British films made with a low budget. I have seen the film and thoroughly enjoyed it. The last scene when they got to the Albert Hall was touching. Pete Posthlewaite is a gem - a really good versatile actor.
And I must admit - Tara Fitzgerald - cracking lass - she can blow my horn anyday !! |
