Advantages: action and romance combined

Disadvantages: it is a bit long really isn't it?

It's hard to believe this film is now 14 years old, but to me it's still a classic.

Mel Gibson stars as William Wallace, leader of the rebel Scottish army that single-handedly took on the might English in the 1300s.

This is one of those films that has something for everyone. I'll be a tad sexist when I say this, but there's fighting for the men (and lots of really great bloody battle scenes that are ultra realistic), and there's romance for the girls. On top of that there are three or four very funny moments which is something everyone likes am I right?

The storyline is really well plotted, with well paced battle scenes every now and again to keep it going, but there are subtle relationships being explored in there too. The father son relationships covered in the film are one of its highlights for me, and the cause of the only tears I shed the whole way through.

The acting is brilliant. Gibson may have annoyed half of Scotland by not really being Scottish, but to me he's totally realistic and this is probably his best film ever. Gibson is the only major star in the film, but he is by far from alone in his acting skill. I honestly don't think anyone does a bad job, which is quite something for a film with such a wide key cast.

The soundtrack is really emotive and powerful, and it is well worth picking up the CD if you can.

If there is anything you can criticise about it, it's that it goes on for three hours. In today's world of film that's a bit too long, and unless you're really enjoying it you may find it dragging a bit. For the girls, one less fight scene would probably do it.

In conclusion, this is a timeless classic that combines action and romance to win everyone over.

Summary: you should watch it!
