Advantages: Great film
Disadvantages: None
As the papers are so rightly calling it “the biggest and funniest film of the year” and I agree, to me its up there with the best of them such as my other two favourites Pretty Woman and Dirty Dancing. Bridget Jones is 32 years of age, single and is desperate to meet the man of her dreams. On New Years Day she decides that she is going to take stock of her life and write a diary. She starts off by writing her New Years resolutions which are:- Resolutions Number one:- Lose twenty pounds Number two:- Find a nice sensible boyfriend and not continue to form romantic attachments to peeping toms, megalomaniacs and emotional twits or perverts. The beginning of the film most of us can relate to, whereby she is checking that her telephone is working properly and getting drunk on her own and singing to sad love songs waiting for that man of her dreams to walk into her living room and sweep her off her feet. The turning point that encouraged her to get a grip of her life was when she had to endure another one of her Mother and Father’s New Years Day parties where her Mother tries to fix her up with any single man available at the time. Her Mother has especially chosen an outfit for her daughter to help her chances, but it’s hideous and resembles a patterned carpet. At the party she meets Mark Darcy whom she thinks is quite nice from behind and thinks that her Mother may have got it right this time until he turns around and is wearing a tacky Christmas jumper. After several minutes of poor and awkward conversation it becomes apparent he has no interest in her and finds her smoking and drinking habits too much to bear. She later overhears him talking unkindly about her. That’s when she’s hit rock bottom. Once she has started the diary renewed confidence is coming back and she proceeds to charm her boss with short skirts and some serious flirting. In following her through the yea
r she manages to have two serious relationships, changes jobs from working in a publishing company to becoming a Newsreader of unique style, especially when she reveals her skimpy underwear whilst sliding down a fireman’s pole and the whole nation gets a glimpse. Throughout the film you really get to bond with her character she is pretty, has great charm and an outstanding personality which men do find irresistible. Although her downside is mostly her timings and they can be at very bad moments and whilst watching the film you are squirming in your seat. The film is action packed with romance, music, slight violence (nothing too bad), tears and laughter. The running time is 93 minutes and I guarantee you will be watching it over and over again.
