Advantages: Lots of bright, pretty colours

Disadvantages: No content

Peyton Reed has made a career out of rewriting tired scripts to say something new: Down With Love was a fantastically clever feminist reworking of 1950s Doris Day style movies; The Break Up is a more realistic, modern version of the rom com. However, the director's first feature, Bring it On doesn't bring the same interesting genre twist to the sports picture. Like Friday Night Lights (a much better attempt at the same kind of idea), the movie has a twist which tries to negate the usual tired rah-rah attitude of American sporting culture to say something deeper and more interesting about success, failure and social justice. However, though the film is clearly shaped by lofty aspirations towards reworking its genre, the execution falls painfully short.

This is- in large part- the fault of the script. Kirsten Dunst and Eliza Dushku have buckets of charm and screen presence between them, but saddled with some awful lines, there's little they can do to save the show. Reed's direction is pedestrian and cliched at best, and the whole thing is not helped by a dazzlingly bad soundtrack.

The DVD is pleasantly packaged, with a fairly standard collection of extra features including features on location, make-up and wardrobe, as well as the usual music video and extended and deleted scenes. I hear there's an Easter Egg too, but I really didn't care enough about the movie to be bothered to find it, I'm afraid!

Unless you're a fourteen year old girl, this is unlikely to appeal.

Summary: Bad.
