Memorable quotes
Brooke: Just because you skanks go all the way, doesn't mean your team will.
Brooke: Oh, and Penn? It's your loss. I'm double-jointed.
Ruben: P-E-A-C-E! Peace to the middle east! Go Planet!
My opinion
As the third film in this series wasn't as bad as I expected, I decided to give this one a shot too, and was pleasantly surprised. Although it wasn't as good as the first and third films, it wasn't half bad.
I really liked the mix of characters in this film and the makers really tried to include everyone. The Jet's leader has the predictable ditzy best friend, the Sharks have a goth cheerleader, and the cheesy, over happy camp leader.
Where the cheers in the other films were mostly just that, this film makes a big point of adding the dance moves into the story as well. There are a lot of cheers in the other films but this one is way over the top. In pretty much every other scene we either see them practising, having a cheer off with the opposing team or just prancing around in their rooms. There is this quite big, wierd dance/ cheer off scene about 40 minutes in and I didn't really understand it. It didn't last very long and it didn't amount to anything so I think it was just a waste of time. For the main part though, the cheers and dances are well choreographed and impressive.
The film never actually states how old the characters are but it is hinted that they are seniors in high school. The script makes them seem older than they look. The lead of the Sharks, Carson, played by Ashley Benson looks like Taylor Momsen from Gossip Girl and is very young looking for her role. Although I don't think the acting was too bad, it wasn't that great either. Jennifer Tisdale, sister of Ashley from HSM, plays the dumb best friend of Brooke and thought she was OK, but they tried too hard to make her seem dumb. I did really like Penn, played by Michael Copon though. He is certainly easy on the eyes and made the film for me. He seemed to be the only one with some serious acting skills and I loved his broody, good guy character.
Even though this is very much a chick flick, the makers tried to appeal more to the guys by setting it in Florida and having all the girls wander around in their bikinis and even skimpier cheerleading uniforms all the time. All of the film is set in Universal Studios so I wonder how much money they made after the film was released.
The best thing about the film is the soundtrack with songs from Ashley Tisdale, Beyonce, Hilary Duff and Pitbull, amongst others. The music was upbeat and fun to listen to and worked really well with the cheer/ dance sequences.
The film of course, has the moral that everything will be ok if everyone works together as a team, which is way over done by now. The film is cheesy and predictable but it does have some funny moments that kind of saved it for me. I wouldn't go as far as to say it is one you can watch over and over again but if you are a fan of Bring it on, its an essential buy to complete the set.
Im sure we are all quite bored of these repetitive films by now, but the 5th (and hopefully final) film is being released in September 2009 but i wont be rushing out to buy it. Im starting to see a pattern of films we thought were over being brought back like this one, The Final Destination and Scream 4.
Summary: Slightly better than # 2
