Bringing Down The House (DVD) ... released 12 January, 2004 at Touchstone Home Video / Features of the DVD: PAL / The pleasingly contrasting comic styles of Queen Latifah and Steve Martin bring some energy to Bringing Down the House, an otherwise hopelessly formulaic comedy. Martin plays Peter, an uptight lawyer too obsessed with work to spend quality time with his kids. Into his life comes Queen Latifah as Charlene, an escaped convict who threatens to wreck his relationship with a wealthy but arch-conservative client (Joan Plowright, in high dudgeon) if Peter won't take up her case. Of course, Latifah's exuberant ways enchant his kids and bring out a looser, livelier side of Peter, all in a series of scenes so standard they hardly register. Thank goodness for Eugene Levy; as one of Peter's law partners with a taste for Charlene's bodacious brand of sexy, Levy's ingenious transformation from nebbish to loverman is the movie's secret weapon, stealthily planting comic explosions amidst the modest rice-krispie-crackle of the stale plot. --Bret Fetzer

There can be few stars in Hollywood who have gone down the dumper as fast as Steve Martin. If you remember the golden heydays of his career then you must be in a position ~ if you ever liked his work anyway ~ of seeing each new release come out to minor fanfares, dwindling returns, and a prompter appearance at the local video store with some chagrin. Having said that, he hasn't been idle. First writing the novel Shopgirl, he's spent much of the past couple of years in getting that movie off the ground. While it's churlish and out of place to mention how quickly Bowfinger sent theediscerning to sleep, Novocaine was his best film in yonks too ~ an ...  Read the complete review

The story Peter Sanderson (Steve Martin) is an uptight lawyer who’s too busy to lead a normal life. He meets a woman called Charlene aka Lawyergirl (Queen Latifah) in an online law chatroom. He really enjoys chatting to her, as he’s quite a lonely guy since separating from his wife, Kate (Jean Smart). Peter and Charlene decide to have a date but Charlene is not what Steve thinks she is. He expects a blonde skinny well dressed lawyer to turn up but to his horror a big black woman turns up on his doorstep. She informs him that she’s Charlene but Peter says she can’t be, as she looks nothing like she did in the picture. He shown her ...  Read the complete review

Ask me to name my favorite kind of film and I would have to say that a rip roaring comedy would always be at the top of my list. It's good to laugh, its great therapy and I would have a number of comedy films in my top ten. I am a big fan of the great Mel Brooks. I loved the humour of Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, controversial, but very funny. If you asked me ten years ago to name some of the great comedy film performers I would have gladly added Steve Martin to that list. Who can forget the wonderful Roxanne,The man with two brains, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. If you asked me for that list a week ago, however, you would not have found his ...  Read the complete review

In my issue of Empire magazine there was a preview for a film called Bringing Down The House. I looked at who was in it before I decided I was going to collect the tickets. It was Queen Latifah who I know from Chicago and then Steve Martin who everyone knows he is very funny. I went to get my tickets and sat down to watch. The film begins with instant messaging between to people and them speaking when it is being typed. They are describing themselves to each other and just in general getting to know each other. They decide to meet up and so Peter (Steve Martin) is typing in his office to lawyer girl when his friend Howie walks in and he explains and shows a ...  Read the complete review
