Advantages: Nicholas Cage at his psychotic best
Disadvantages: troubling plot, rapid debunking of assumed facts
Scorceses' new film "Bringing out the Dead" starring Nicholas cage Dan akroyd and Patricia arquette amongst others, has been said by many to be exactly the same as taxi driver, but in an ambulance. i would disagree with this and say that just because the bleak manhattan back drop remains this does not mean the film is unoriginal. scorcese is clearly interested in new york and has a right to be, the bustling metropolis has many stories, and encapsulates so much that it deserves not one view but an overwhelming multitude, I am sure that anyone who has visited will say the same. Nicholas Cage plays the overstressed underrested paramedic who's conscience is plagued by those patients he has been unable to save, personified by the young girl Rose. As he is teamed up with increasingly bizarre partners we see Cage slip into a depression of such depth and breadth it sucks in everyone he meets, including the audience. throughout all this is Cage's quest for normalcy, he wants to quit his job: "I'll fire you tommorrow, I promise" his supervisor says. he is domatically chasing Patricia Arquette, who appears in scenes with a Lynchian askew. while being a dark and troubling glance into a man over the edges' psyche the film is fresh and watchable. before critisising it, you must watch it, then watch it again.
