Brokeback Mountain (DVD) ... ... / DVD released 24 April, 2006 at Entertainment in Video / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL / A sad, melancholy ache pervades Brokeback Mountain, Ang Lee's haunting, moving film that, like his other movies, explores societal constraints and the passions that lurk underneath. This time, however, instead of taking on ancient China, 19th-century England, or '70s suburbia, Lee uses the tableau of the American West in the early '60s to show how two lovers are bound by their expected roles, how they rebel against them, and the repercussions for each of doing so--but the romance here is between two men. Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) are two itinerant ranchers looking for work in Wyoming when they meet and embark on a summer sheepherding job in the shadow of titular Brokeback Mountain. The taciturn Ennis, uncommunicative in the extreme, finds himself opening up around the gregarious Jack, and the two form a bond that surprisingly catches fire one cold night out in the wilderness. Separating at the end of the summer, each goes on to marry and have children, but a reunion years later proves that, if anything, their passion for each other has grown significantly. And while Jack harbours dreams of a life together, the tight-lipped Ennis is unable to bring himself to even consider something so revolutionary. Its open, unforced depiction of love between two men made Brokeback an instant cultural touchstone, for both good and bad, as it was tagged derisively as the "gay cowboy movie," but also heralded as a breakthrough for mainstream cinema. Amidst all the hoopla of various agendas, though, was a quiet, heartbreaking love story that was both of its time and universal--it was the quintessential tale of star-crossed lovers, but grounded in an ever-changing America that promised both hope and despair. Adapted by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana from Annie Proulx's short story, the movie echoes the sparse bleakness of McMurtry's The Last Picture Show with its fading of the once-glorious West; but with Lee at the helm, it also resembles The Ice Storm, as it showed the ripple effects of a singular event over a number of people. As always, Lee's work with actors is unparalleled, as he elicits graceful, nuanced performances from Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway as the wives affected overtly and subliminally by their husbands' affair, and Gyllenhaal brings surprising dimensions to a character that could have easily just been a puppy dog of a boy. It's Ledger, however, who's the breakthrough in the film, and his portrait of an emotionally repressed man both undone and liberated by his feelings is mesmerizing and devastating. Spare in style but rich with emotion, Brokeback Mountain earns its place as a classic modern love story. --Mark Englehart

... the 2006 Oscars (something I maintain was the right choice), Brokeback Mountain is a stellar and emotionally resonant film. The film is set in the 1960s, and revolves around ranch hand Ennis del Mar (Heath Ledger) and rodeo cowboy Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal), who meet and subsequently fall in love during a time in which this sort of behaviour wasn't really tolerated. Their love story is chronicled throughout one Summer, but after that, they fight, and then go their separate ways. They each get with a woman: Ennis...more

Apologies in advance for the length of the review, I was trying to cut bits out but it makes it difficult to do this wonderful movie justice! Arriving just in time for an Oscar nomination for its leading men, Ang Lee‘s intimate epic, “Brokeback Mountain” is the tale of forbidden love in the deep South with a twist…the love is between two men, living in a time and place where being gay is likely to have you lynched. Less of a gay cowboy movie and more of a universally resonant love story, Brokeback charts a relationship that lasts decades in an unchanging homophobic world. Two ranch hands fulfilling every stereotype known to cowboykind are hired ...  Read the complete review

Brokeback Mountain is based on a story by Annie Proulx. The screenplay is by Larry McMurtry and it was directed by Ang Lee. The film explores the clandestine loving and sexual relationship of two men over the course of three decades as they simultaneously continue heterosexual married family lives. Rodeo cowboy Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) meet for the first time on Brokeback Mountain were they have both been hired to herd sheep. It is on a cold winters night in the mountains that they are forced to share a tent and where their first unexpected sexual liaison takes place. Neither seem too sure of their newly discovered sexual relationship ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Two cowboys and a mountain (283 words)

Rating:

Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal star in Brokeback Mountain as two strangers who are thrown together one summer in the 1960s when they are both given work as cowboys on a mountain. At first they are unsure of each other but gradually the hardship of being out in the wilderness forces them to bond and they become friends. And then, one night they become lovers, setting a course of events in place that would ultimately lead to tragedy. As always, I felt that Heath Ledger's acting was spot-on (though I could barely comprehend what he was saying) and Jake Gyllenhaal delivers a truly remarkable performance as a fervently homosexual trying to live as a heterosexual ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Brokeback Mountain (DVD): A heart wrenching love story, unusually told. (718 words)

Rating:

Brokeback Mountain is a rare mix of western and romance, with plenty of drama thrown in for good measure. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Jack Twist, and the late Heath Ledger as Ennis del Mar, both looking for work in rural Wyoming in 1963. They meet when they are both assigned to the same job, working as shepherds up on Brokeback Mountain over the winter, and there is a chemistry between them from the beginning. Over their time on the mountain, they become closer, both physically and spiritually. This part of the film is idyllic - the scenery is beautiful, and the soft music and minimal dialogue draws you into their situation, and when the seasonal ...  Read the complete review
