Each of them has their wn reason for fighting GENOM (other than the fact it's a down right evil company), but unfortunately it's never explored to any great depth. What the series does do well is keep a good pace, building up to an a...more

Premium Review Bubblegum Crisis (DVD): Product of the 80s. (613 words)

Bubblegum Crisis is something of a fan favourite and this largely seems to be for its Eighties rock soundtrack. The eight part Original Animated Video (OAV) series was produced towards the end of the Eighties and can seem a little dated now. It's not without its merits though, but I think there's a tendancy to often overrate it. Set in the future city of MegaTokyo, the episodes follow the activites of the Knightsabers, a team of 4 women in Hard-Suits (basically combat exoskeletons) who fight malfunctioning Boomers a kind of robot produced by the GENOM corporation. The AD Police also try to fight Boomers, but lacking the advanced HardSuits they tend to ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Why are the ADPolice so crap??? (400 words)

Rating:

Bubblegum Crisis is considered a cyberpunk classic by many anime fans. It certainly has a pretty good legion of supporters. Of course, with fame also comes hype, and sometimes the product doesn't live up to it. And while Bubblegum Crisis isn't quite as good as I expected, it's still quite entertaining nonetheless. In 25th century Tokyo, technology has advanced enough for androids or "Boomers" to be developed. However, not all Boomers are law-abiding, and some are downright deadly. Since the regular police seem unable to control this menace to society, four women make it their goal to wipe out Boomer crime. Sporting nifty battle armor and ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Bubblegum Crisis (DVD): Konya wa Hurricane!!! (368 words)
by - written on 28/07/00 (Very useful, 142 readings)
Rating:

Orginally planned as a 13-part OAV series, the original Bubblegum Crisis was eventually beset with production problems leaving it at just 8 episodes. With the original Tokyo destroyed in a great earthquake, the city of MegaTokyo is born in it's place. Much of the rebuilding was assisted by Genom, a huge mega-corperation, and it's Boomer robots. A Boomer is a humanoid robot, and they are bloody powerful. Not only that, they have a habit of going mad. The AD Police, set up to combat boomers, find themselves under equipted and overwhelmed. But out of the shadows of MegaTokyo come the Knightsabres, a team of female bounty hunters in ...  Read the complete review
