Buck Rogers In The 25th Century - Series 1 (DVD) ... Harvey S. Laidman, David Moessinger, Leslie H. Martinson, Guy Magar / DVD released 22 November, 2004 at Playback / Features of the DVD: Box set, PAL / With its campy combination of lightweight adventure and Spandex disco chic, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century is a nostalgic throwback to post-Star Wars opportunism. Series co-creator Glen A. Larson was incapable of originality, and former soap star Gil Gerard (in the title role) was a bland incarnation of the comic-strip hero, so the much-anticipated series premiered on September 20, 1979, with serious disadvantages. Although the two-hour pilot "Awakening" had tested successfully as a theatrical release, Gerard and the show's producers could never agree on a stable tone for the series, which presents Capt. William "Buck" Rogers as a jovial space cowboy who is accidentally time-warped from 1987 to 2491. Earth is engaged in interplanetary war following a global holocaust, and Buck's piloting skills make him an ideal starfighter recruit for the Earth Defense Directorate, where his closest colleagues are Dr. Huer (Tim O'Connor), squadron leader Col. Wilma Deering (former model Erin Gray, looking oh-so-foxy), the wisecracking robot Twiki (voiced by cartoon legend Mel Blanc), and a portable computer-brain named Dr. Theopolis, who's carried by Twiki like oversized bling-bling. The series struggled through an awkward first season, with routine plots elevated by decent special effects and noteworthy guest stars including Jamie Lee Curtis, ill-fated Playboy Playmate Dorothy Stratten (appearing, with her voice dubbed over, less than a year before her tragic murder), Batman alumnus Julie Newmar, Buster Crabbe (veteran of vintage Buck Rogers movie serials), and several others in a show that favored vamps and vixens over credible science fiction. A full-scale overhaul resulted in a disastrous second season, but devoted fans still gravitate to Hawk (Thom Christopher), the charismatic alien "birdman" who was introduced with new characters and a new, space-faring search for lost tribes from Earth (with echoes of Larson's own Battlestar Galactica). Behind-the-scenes squabbles continued, and by mid-season of 1981, NBC pulled the plug on a breezy, still-engaging series that suffered from uneasy chemistry and never realized its full potential. Existing somewhere between Galactica and Lost in Space in the TV sci-fi food chain, this Buck--with a dearth of DVD extras--now functions as a cheesy stroll down memory lane. --Jeff Shannon

... Buck is accidentally frozen, following a space experiment gone wrong, and is reawakened in the 25th century. The universe has been colonised, robots are widespread, and space pirates waylay unsuspecting ships all over the space lanes. In short, every pulp stereotype you can think of. Where "Star Trek" had a more noble message, and the dilemmas faced by the cast were largely moral, Buck and his crew's biggest problem is how to wipe out all the bad guys and escape before the planetoid or whatever blows up. Oh I couldn't help review one of my favourite sci-fi characters the legendary Buck Rogers. Gil Gerard played Buck and was made for the part and who can forget Erin Gray as Wilma. Today still as young as ever. But what made this cool was Bucks side kick Twiki In this film version Buck gets frozen in a time warp and gets sent to the future to the 25th century. Earth has undergone great transformation and views Buck with suspicion thinking he might be a pirate, a Draconian spy. Wilma shows him round the new earth. Buck learns that since his day nuclear war has ravaged the earth and mankind barely survived. There are mutants roaming barren lands. Buck ...  Read the complete review

When NBC were looking around for another series to cash in on the Science Fiction boom of the late seventies, they hit upon the bright idea of resurrecting one of the oldest space heroes, Anthony "Buck" Rogers - who was created for a 1928 novella called "Armageddon 2419 A.D." by Anthony Phillips Nowlan. The character had an iconic appeal, having been a pulp in the 20s, a movie serial in the 30s and, most importantly, was now out of copyright. Changing the main character's name to a more earthy "William", they cast new face Gil Gerard in the lead. Tha basic plot remains true to its pulp origins - Buck is accidentally ...  Read the complete review

This film was originally made as a pilot for the television series, but it became a bit of a hit in it’s own right. Of course the star of the film is supposed to be Captain William ‘Buck’ Rogers (played by Gil Gerard), but as anyone who has watched the film will tell you, the real star is the drone Twiki. Twiki looks like a robot and is about 4 foot high and only has a few lines throughout the film, the title of this opinion is one of his best lines, when he has been hiding in a fridge. However, Twiki does repeat over and over again – ‘billie, billie, billie’ and you find yourself really drawn to this crazy little character. ...  Read the complete review

Looking for a movie to keep the kids happy for an hour and a half and you don't need to be worrying about the content? Then this is the movie for you! It is a watered down version of Starwars and aimed at the younger viewer where one Star Fighter takes on the entire might of the Evil forces and wins. Excellent viewing on bank holidays or when boredom sets in. Good clean fun and the robot is added interest. ...  Read the complete review
