Buffalo Soldiers (2003) (DVD) ... released 07 February, 2005 at Cinema Club / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL / An Army-base comedy about soldiers "with nothing to kill except time", Buffalo Soldiers invites casual comparison to Catch-22 and M*A*S*H. It's 1989: the Berlin Wall is falling, completing the Cold War's thaw and Ray Elwood (Joaquin Phoenix)--a clerk with the 317th Supply Battalion, stationed in west Germany--combats boredom with a variety of black-market schemes, from cooking heroin for the base's corrupt MPs to dealing stolen arms to the highest bidder, in addition to having a shallow affair with the two-timing wife (Elizabeth McGovern) of his outgoing commander (Ed Harris). Elwood's new CO (Scott Glenn) clamps down on his illegal activities while protecting his daughter (Anna Paquin) from Elwood's advances. Fine casting and positive buzz couldn't prevent this movie's ironic fate: acquired by Miramax one day before the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Buffalo Soldiers was shelved for nearly two years, by which time this dark and defiantly amusing exercise in political incorrectness--based on the novel by Robert O'Connor--had been overshadowed by world events. --Jeff Shannon

Premium Review Buffalo Soldiers (2003) (DVD): Peace Time... It's Better Than War (633 words)
by - written on 02/08/08 (Very useful, 2 readings)
Rating:

Buffalo soldiers is a distinctly different military film as it occurs in the peace-time period shortly before the end of the cold war in 1988. It's lead role is filled by Joaquin Phoenix (Emperor Commodus in Gladiator) as Batallion Clerk Ray Ellwood. He and his unit are based within Berlin, but Ellwood fills his time by selling procurred army supplies to the locals and drugs to his various base acquintances. His main sideline includes the cooking of Heroin shipments for a local drug supplier. This tends to be how he keeps most of the soldiers into drugs. The film begins with the recruits playing a game of American Football indoors, and an unpopular ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review War - what is it good for? (978 words)

War, what is it good for? Apparently not relieving boredom, especially if you happen to be a large group of American soldiers who, shall we say, aren’t blessed with their fair share of brain cells. It’s 1989 and the Cold War is nearly over. The Americans continue to keep up the pretence that the Commies are coming but for the past few years the USSR has been imploding. Joaquin Phoenix plays Ray Elwood, a soldier who has been assigned to an American base in West Germany. With little to fight for and having a position within the camp to get away with things, he decides to make and sell drugs. ‘Buffalo Soldiers’ follows Elwood and his friends as they go ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Buffalo Soldiers (2003) (DVD): Very Disappointing (1115 words)

On a recent trip to Tesco and a quick search through the bargain DVD's I came across this one which I thought I would treat hubby to and also for me it stars Joaquin Phoenix who I do really like. I have to say from reading the cover of the DVD I was expecting good things and for the film to be very funny, Sadly I was very let down. The film is set in 1989 with the US military based in West Germany. They w ere stationed there to train and prepare for what people believed would be the start of another war. We meet Ray Elwood, played by Phoenix who a clerk for his regiment. We meet him and his men when they are all playing a game of American football in their ...  Read the complete review
