A Bug's Life (DVD)

A Bug's Life (DVD) ... ... / DVD released 08 January, 2001 at Walt Disney Home Video / Features of the DVD: Animated, Full Screen, PAL, Widescreen / There was a rare magic on the big screen in 1995, when the people at Pixar came up with the first fully computer-animated film, Toy Story, and their second feature film, A Bug's Life, may miss the bull's-eye but Pixar's target is so lofty that it's hard to find the film anything less than irresistible. Brighter and more colourful than the other animated insect movie of 1998 (Antz), A Bug's Life is the sweetly told story of Flik (voiced by David Foley), an ant searching for better ways to be a bug. His colony unfortunately revolves around feeding and fearing the local grasshoppers (lead by Hopper, voiced with gleeful menace by Kevin Spacey). When Flik accidentally destroys the seasonal food supply for the grasshoppers he decides to look for help ("We need bigger bugs!"). The ants, led by Princess Atta (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), are eager to dispose of the troublesome Flik. Yet he finds help--a hearty bunch of bug warriors--and brings them back to the colony. Unfortunately they are just travelling performers, afraid of conflict. As with Toy Story, the ensemble of creatures and voices is remarkable and often inspired. Highlights include wiseacre comedian Denis Leary as an un-ladylike ladybird, Joe Ranft as the German-accented caterpillar, David Hyde Pierce as a stick insect and Michael McShane as a pair of unintelligible woodlice. The scene-stealer is Atta's squeaky-voiced sister, baby Dot (Hayden Panettiere), who has a big soft spot for Flik. More gentle and kid-friendly than Antz, A Bug Life's still has some good suspense and a wonderful demise in store for the villain. However, the film--a worldwide hit--will be remembered for its most creative touch: "outtakes" over the end credits à la many live-action comedy films. These dozen or so scenes (both "editions" of outtakes are contained here) are brilliant and deserve a special place in film history right along with 1998's other most talked-about sequence: the opening Normandy invasion in Saving Private Ryan. --Doug Thomas

... with a solid soundtrack makes it visually something quite beautiful to behold. No, there's just something about the story that doesn't quite work. For me, the characters aren't that likable. Perhaps the fact that they're insects rather than animals - when you see animals, kids know them and like them, but there isn't much relatability to a group of ants or a ladybird is there? The story is fairly funny, but not in the way that it keeps you entertained. There are some funny characters, but they are shallow and cl...more

Premium Review A Bug's Life (DVD): I'm boggled eyed for Bugs (975 words)

Last night after not being able to sleep, I'd already watched Antz and submitted my review and I decided to watch this straight after it. Antz was ok (please see review) and I'd heard if you watched Antz you really should watch A Bugs Life as well! So when I bought Antz I popped this in my trolley as well! No wonder I'm always in the red eh? lol May I just say I was so shocked that this film was so similar to the story of Antz lol I felt a bit of De Ja Vu! A Bugs Life Plot.... The film has many characters, all in their own right but it is quite focused on Flik, an inventor ant, full of hope, optimisim and quite a lot of ideas on making ...  Read the complete review

As per usual, last Christmas (it seems like such a long time....!) threw up a few good movies worth watching on the TV. It was Christmas 2001 when I saw Antz on TV, last Christmas, whilst flicking through the TV guide I noticed A Bugs Life advertised. I couldn’t remember whether this was what I’d seen the year earlier or not. I read the description, it sounded familiar. So much so I wasn’t going to bother watching it as I assumed it was what I’d seen the year earlier. By some stoke of luck though there wasn’t anything else worth watching at the time of this movie. (It was probably yet another repeat of Only Fools and Horses on the other ...  Read the complete review

There's just something about a Pixar animated film that says quality. You just know it's going to be good without reading anything about it. This is because the makers concentrate on the story and characters as well as the visuals. A Bugs Life is no different. First you've got the outstanding CGI animation that is truly wonderful to look at. It bursts with colour and imagination. Then there are the characters such as a luvvie type circus magician in the form of an insect. A real nasty grasshopper with a bumbling brother and an ant with a clumsy knack for inventions. In this story the ants gather food for the grasshoppers until one ant messes the ...  Read the complete review

As a parent I’ve had to endure the pits of despair in terms of children’s films and television. Yes I’ve been forced to sit through the likes of Pokemon (The Movie) and the truly monumentally horrendous ‘Thomas and the magic railroad’. Pokemon I can handle, totally annoying but at least it’s not patronising fluffy garbage. Anyway, for those of you out there that have found yourselves in the same miserable position as me there is good news on the horizon! Disney have saved my backside many times in the past and have prevented me from slipping in to a coma when it’s been a case of one children’s programme too many. ...  Read the complete review

A bug's life was the second brilliant Disney and Pixar master piece to be released following the success of Toy Story and was released back in 1998. I know a lot of people didn't rate this film as highly as Toy Story which, to be fair, is fine as let's face it Toy Story was brilliant but, it still has that fantastic animation and great storyline with a great cast of actors and actresses to make it a top class film. The story: Flik is an ant living in a colony that spends the summer collecting enough food to last themselves and the mean and evil grasshoppers throughout the winter. At the end of summer season the grasshoppers come and collect their ...  Read the complete review
