Advantages: Funny
Disadvantages: Aimed at a young audience
A 1999 satirical romantic comedy starring Natasha Lyonne, Michelle Williams, Clea duVall, and directed by Jamie Babbit.
It is a tongue in cheek film about homosexuality.
The Plot
Megan's friends and family think she is a lesbian as she has pictures of women in her locker and doesn't like kissing her boyfriend. They take action to combat her gay-ness by sending her to gay camp for de-gay-ification.
True directions is a learning programme so homosexuals can relearn how to be straight and how to avoid the gay lifestyle, like a gay rehab clinic.
Megan denies being gay because she is a cheerleader she couldn't possibly be gay. As part of the rehab programme gays in the camp have to go through various steps to relearn their gender identity. They have to undertake gender stereotpyed roles (cleaning, cooking for the girls and gardening and cars for the guys). They are forced to wear pink and blue outfits. The pinnacle of the programme is simulated straight sex and if they pass, graduation.
Megan starts falling in love with Graeme (Clea DuVall) and they end up running away together during the graduation ceremony which is where the film ends.
My thoughts
Taken literally this film could be quite offensive but in reality it is really quite very funny. One watch is enough but if you like gay comedies it is worth a watch.
The film is predictable from the outset and there is little character developent.
Despite the predicability, garish costumes and cliche scripting I wouldn't say the film is awful. The cast make a good job of creating the atmosphere and keeping a light hearted look at what could be contrued as a serious and difficult to approach topic. There are humourous moments throughout and the the absuridty of the whole plot makesit a really enjoyable watch.
Summary: Tongue in cheek comedy
