I'm all for giving the sequel a chance, too often good films are overlooked simply because they weren't as groundbreaking or as well received as the predecessor. So its with an open mind that I entered into the Butterfly Effect 2, the unrelated sequel to an only half-decent original film. I figured that if its as good as the original, then its watchable. If its worse, then I'm in for it. But there is that small chance that this time round they can get it right. Five minutes in, and on the fourth mention of money by the film's greedy lead character, I wanted to punch him and kick the tv. The story for what it is is similar, if not a complete retread, of the ... Read the complete review

There is a current trend for film producers to release sequels to films we never wanted directly onto DVD. Who hasn’t laughed at Blockbusters attempts to sell these as ‘top titles’? ‘Hollow Man 2’ , starring Christian Slater rather than Kevin Bacon, and ‘Bring it On Again’, starring no one instead of lipless Kirsten Dunst; are just two examples. As a rule I avoid all of these shameless cash-ins as a means to protect my psychological good health, but one that did catch my eye was the sequel to brainless sci fi film ‘The Butterfly Effect’. Could this straight to DVD title live up to the ridiculous first film that saw one of the stupidest endings in cinema ... Read the complete review

After a memorable day at the beach with his girlfriend, and two best friends, Nick Larson's world is ripped apart when his three companions are killed in a horrific car accident. Waking some time later, Nick is barely able to comprehend what has happened, and is plagued by depression and excruciating headaches, both of which start to jeopardise his budding career. After a particularly strenuous day at the office, he is sent home to recuperate, and finally makes the brave decision to look at the photos that he took of his friends, shortly before the accident. A particularly vicious headache suddenly takes over and Nick blacks out. But when he wakes up, things are very ... Read the complete review

In terms of films that mess with your mind, The Butterfly Effect was right up there with the best of them. This sequel, however, tried to emulate the concept that had made the previous film so powerful, yet it fails to do so. Nick loses his girlfriend and best friends in a car accident. As he struggles to come to terms with the loss, he starts to lose focus at work. Juts when everything seems to be going from bad to worse, he has what seems like a mental attack, and finds himself transported back to the moment of the crash. Realising he has managed to transport himself through time, he sets about making things right again, only to realise that, as you change ... Read the complete review

Take an original idea like The Butterfly Effect, that a person can travel into their own past life and change their present. The original was such a new concept it was a welcome breath of fresh air. Unfortunately the main character in the original was left as a vegetable by his time travelling and no longer able to travel into the past. So what do the writers of the sequel decide to do? Create an entirely new bunch of people, one of whom has the same powers but only discovers it after a near fatal car crash that kills his best friend and fiancé. As he makes each progressive journey into the past apart from the 1st one his life gets worse and worse. His 1st ... Read the complete review
