Advantages: The songs

Disadvantages: Dark

Classic musical, always worth rewatching.

Set in the louche Berlin of the late 30's, Sally Bowles, a free spirited cabaret artiste encounters the reserved Brian who has just moved into her building. The unlikely pair and opposites on every level but a friendship forms. Romantic ups and downs ensue and the atmosphere becomes darker, the nazis are on the rise and life as everyone knows it is under threat.

Memorable less for its storyline than for the musical numbers, Liza Minelli took on her defining role in this 1972 production. She won the oscar and deservedly so, she delivers a powerhouse performance of the music and a delicate vulnerability in the role of Sally.

Happliy it delivers all the seedy atmosphere of the cabaret scene of the days. God knows how glossy and airbrushed this would be if ever remade. This is dark and strange and you have to look twice to decide if the dancers are actually female! The Emcee character is memorably creepy and introduces the beginning of the film.

Superb songs delivered with gusto, 'Mein Herr' 'Maybe this time' and 'Money, money' and 'Life is a cabaret' are standouts.

Summary: Life is a cabaret
