Caddyshack (DVD) ... released 28 June, 1999 at Warner Home Video / Features of the DVD: Dubbed, PAL, Widescreen / A purely tasteless, moronic, guilty pleasure. Director Harold Ramis employs a mixture of Mad magazine National Lampoon maturity and Saturday Night Live sarcasm in this goofball golf comedy set on the grounds of a posh country club. Somewhere buried in the slapstick antics, drug references, Marx Brothers-like insults, and gratuitous sex scenes are the intertwined, forgettable subplots of a poor caddie (Michael O'Keefe) trying to earn enough cash to attend college, and golf-tournament and class battles between rich and even richer snobs. Mainly, Ramisjust lets his colourful group of eccentrics crash into each other, relying on several inspired performances to create several hilarious moments of sketch comedy. Most come from the trio of Bill Murray (playing a vile, obsessed groundskeeper engaged in a one-man war with a charismatic and very stuffed gopher), Rodney Dangerfield (basically recreating his crude stand-up routine), and Chevy Chase (who looks bemusedly stoned throughout). Quotable favourites include Murray's acted-out fantasy of winning the Masters, his tall tale about caddying for the Dalai Lama, an overreaching priest's rain-soaked golf game, Dangerfield's verbal assault on the club's uptight dining patrons, and Chase's lesson on the essence of golf ("Be the ball, Danny"). A perfect double feature with other comparably crass films such as National Lampoon's Vacation or Stripes. --Dave McCoy

... Chevy Chase plays Ty Webb, the country club stud, who is a smartass and consistently funny at the same time. Chase is the star of the show in my opinion, but not by much as the entire cast is that good. Bill Murray plays Carl Spackler, the crazed green keeper with a gopher problem. He is both stupid and loveable, and his monologues are side splitting at times. Rodney Dangerfield plays the loud, arrogant, self made rich-guy who irritates everyone, and he does it perfectly with some great one-liners. I could easily go ...more

Crowned Review Caddyshack (DVD): It's a Cinderella Story (1268 words)
by - written on 12/04/08 (Very useful, 103 readings)
Rating:

Caddyshack is set in the prestigious and exclusive Bushwood Country Club and is the story of Danny Noonan. A young caddy from a poor background he is working to earn enough money, or win a scholarship so that he can go to college. But that isn't the point of the film and serves only as a central plot thread to hang all the other parts off. The film is a vehicle for the Saturday Night Live boys and was one of their first forays into the movies. Directed by Harold Ramis it starred Chevy Chase and Bill Murray, as well as stand up veteran Rodney Dangerfield. Now, before you walk away muttering I should point out that this is the film where Chevy Chase was funny ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Kill The Gopher (1157 words)

~ ~ There aren’t too many comedy movies about golf. I suppose some folks would say that’s because there’s nothing particularly funny about golf. But (of course) they’d be mistaken! Some good ones that spring to mind are ‘Happy Gilmore’, and the more recent ‘Tin Cup’. But for me, as a diehard golf fan, the ultimate golf comedy simply has to be the old 1980 movie, ‘Caddyshack’, starring such comedy geniuses as Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, and Rodney Dangerfield. ~ ~ The storyline is basically very simple. Bushwood Country Club is one of those stuffy, full of it’s own importance, golf clubs which unfortunately still exist even today. (Although they are becoming ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Caddyshack (DVD): One of the funniest films of the eighties. (465 words)

Caddyshack - 1980 - Orion Pictures Starring - Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, Michael O'Keefe, Ted Knight, Bill Murray, Cindy Morgan and Sarah Holcomb. Directed By - Harold Ramis Produced By - Don Macdonald First impressions - This film is about golf, plain and simple. Personally I am not a massive fan of this sport but this film makes it a lot more fun. The whole plot surrounds a young lad named Danny Noonan (Michael O'Keefe) and the golf course president Judge Smails (Ted Knight). The characters are all played very well by the actors although Bill Murray has a relatively small part as the groundsman Carl Speckler. ...  Read the complete review

Though I'd heard for years about CADDYSHACK and how funny it was, I was never very interested in actually seeing it. I was too young to see it in the theater and I kind of thought it was beneath my quality film viewing standards. Poo in the pool. Getting hit in the nuts with a golf ball. Childish and boring. The fact that Rodney Dangerfield is a main character didn't help to win me over either. But after watching it recently, I have to say that sometimes there is a place for poo in the pool. This is a classic 80's comedy with all the accoutrements: drinking, drugs, class wars, teen age sex, bare breasts (before the invention of silicon) and mass ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Caddyshack (DVD): A classic (222 words)

Caddyshack is an all time classic, one of the best sports/comedies ever made. I personally rate it as one of the funniest films ever made, but some may find that a slight exaggeration. The plot is the worst part of this film, and any other cast would have resulted in tragedy, but the cast of this film more than make up for the lack of a good plot. Chevy Chase plays Ty Webb, the country club stud, who is a smartass and consistently funny at the same time.
