Capote (DVD) ... ... / DVD released 03 July, 2006 at Sony Pictures Home Ent. UK / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL / Bolstered by an Oscar-caliber performance by Philip Seymour Hoffman in the title role, Capote ranked highly among the best films of 2005. Written by actor/screenwriter Dan Futterman and based on selected chapters from the biography by Gerald Clarke, this mercilessly perceptive drama shows how Truman Capote brought about his own self-destruction in the course of writing In Cold Blood, the "nonfiction novel" that was immediately acclaimed as a literary milestone. After learning of brutal killings in rural Holcomb, Kansas, in November 1959, Capote gained the confidence of captured killers Perry Smith (Clifton Collins, Jr.) and Dick Hickock (Mark Pellegrino) in an effort to tell their story, but he ultimately sacrificed his soul in the process of writing his greatest book. Hoffman transcends mere mimicry to create an utterly authentic, psychologically tormented portrait of an insincere artist who was not above lying and manipulation to get what he needed. Bennett Miller's intimate direction focuses on the consequences of Capote's literary ambition, tempered by an equally fine performance by Catherine Keener as Harper Lee, Capote's friend and the author of To Kill a Mockingbird, who served as Capote's quiet voice of conscience. Spanning the seven-year period between the Kansas murders and the publication of In Cold Blood in 1966, Capote reveals the many faces of a writer who grew too close to his subjects, losing his moral compass as they were fitted with a hangman's noose. --Jeff Shannon

... tightly honed by Hoffman - well, the guy just had me glued to my seat! It's not a mimic of the real Capote though, it's a pure realisation of what and who this character is. The supporting cast are all excellent too. The character of renowned author Harper Lee (author of a classic novel of the American literary canon, 'To Kill a Mockingbird') is played by Catherine Keener who creates a poise and calm presence that offset's the grandiose beats of the protagonist. The relationship between the authors is at first e...more

One night, while my dad was fussing around in the kitchen and my mother and I had watched as many interior ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Film of the year (1641 words)

Introduction I had vaguely heard of Truman Capote, but didn't really know why he was well-known - I thought perhaps he was a politician or advocate of human rights or something like that. So when a friend asked me if I wanted to see Capote at the cinema, I wasn't particularly interested - until she mentioned that Capote had written a true story, called In Cold Blood, about two killers who had murdered a Kansas family. Doing a little more research, I found out that Capote had befriended the two killers with the aim of writing a book about them, but that he was also the author of Breakfast at Tiffany's, the story of a social butterfly, which could not be more ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Capote (DVD): Cold-hearted? (767 words)

Rating:

This 2005 movie is directed by Bennett Miller and is based on the events surrounding the writing and publishing of real life author Truman Capote's seminal novel 'In Cold Blood'. The events in the movie lends from the autobiography of Capote penned by Gerald Clarke and also uses artistic lisence to reinvent certain events to heighten the dramatic qualities of the story. Phillip Seymour Hoffman plays the hungry-for-success and glory writer whose life forever changes when he undertakes the construction of a novel based on the real life slaughter of a family of four people. Capote's subsequent relationship with the men responsible for the killings is at the heart of the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Shut up Cartman! (951 words)

Phillip Seymour Hoffman is one of those actors that just looks seedy, mostly playing sex offenders and lowlifes in a mixed bag of artistic and geeky movies, reinforcing that image somewhat. If you could define what a stereotypical pedophile would look like on screen then he would be your man, that pasty mix of mistrust and ‘kidult’ menace, which is why he has played that part in three movies so far. In his defense he was also one of the crusty storm chasers in the enjoyable ‘Twister’. He’s not a great actor but a good one, and so his choice of playing America’s foremost writer was an unexpected casting, presumably picked because he looks like Truman and managed to ...  Read the complete review
