Captain Corelli's mandolin is one of those films that very little about it appealed to me, yet I felt compelled to watch it in the hope of being impressed at what I saw.
Starring Nicholas cage and Penelope Cruz, this is set in World war 2, Directed by J.Madden and based upon the best selling (and far superior) novel by Louis De Bernieres.

Set in a luscious Greek Island, where the inhabitants live an almost idyllic lifestyle, the life is trully wonderful with a big sense of community where everybody lives, things are easy going and almost perfect. That is until the second world war hits the Greek islands and the Italian troops move in, causing havoc. Having no-where to stay, officers move in with the locals, and the story focuses on a captain Corelli (Nicholas cage) at the home of Iannis and Pelagia, where all is not well, and he?s not exactly welcomed. However, love is in the air, and Corellie and Pelagia soon fall in love, and this, for me is where this film falls short. Being far more of a love story than a war film, I just think the book does a far better job than the movie, and for me, having read the book already I knew what was coming, and kinda had a feeling this film would not be for me. For this reason it did not appeal to me, but the book (which I incidentally did enjoy) reproduces everything the film failed to do, and although this was a moderate film, if you?ve read the book, I can only see disappointment from seeing the film.

Overall, if you like romantic films with a top love interest, coupled with a taste of war, this could be for you. However, this is not for me, and much better suited to paper then the big screen! Save the money and buy the book.

J. Madden was the films director, not the author of the book. Try to get facts right in your ops and you'll get better ratings. If you update it, let me know. :)
