Based on the novel by Louis de Berniere, CAPTAIN CORELLI'S MANDOLIN stars Nic Cage as Corelli, an Italian soldier who, when dureing World War II Italians occupied a Greek island known as Cephallonia, is required to stay at the home of a doctor, played by John Hurt.

Corelli is adored by the doctor's daughter, played by Penelope Cruz, and this causes great problems as she is already engaged to another man.

The film both looks and sounds good, with some excellent cinematography, showing off the island to great effect. The music is beautiful, as is Cruz, and the only real let down is Nic Cage's accent. It's nice to see him in a role that is not his usual action movie character, but unfortunately the accent severely lets him down. John Hurt however is, as usual, nothing less than superb.

I've never read the book, but now, after having seen the film, I shall be seeking it out at my earliest opportunity.
