Advantages: The beautiful scenery, Its a good film, A happy ending!

Disadvantages: Do not compare it to the book, The emotion of teh book doesn't come throug

I have read the book and watched the film and I have to say that in some ways, the film does not do justice to the book.
I would also say that some aspects of the film are different to the book, and quite a few major changes have been made, however the basic storyline remains.
Both Cage and Cruz preform well as Captain Corelli and Pelagia respectively and in this respect, the film brings the characters to life.
The film includes breathtaking scenery from the island of Kafelonia and it was quite nice from a personal point of view as we have just returned from holiday there and were able to recognise some of the places.
The film serves to give a good picture of Greek life during the Second World War and shows well how the Italians and Germans differed in their approaches to War, to each other, and to the Kafelonian people.
Now the bad bit.
I would have to say that the film doesnt do justice to the emotions and feelings Louis De Bernieres portrays in his book. You dont really get to see how Pelagia feels when the Captain leaves and how her life changes. You dont get to see the impact that the soldier who saves the Captain's life has on the story as a whole. Also because parts of the ending have been changed, you dont get to see what happened after the earthquake that destroyed parts of the island in 1952, whereas the book goes on for a number of years after this event.
However summing up, I would recomend the film, but would say not to compare it to the book as you would be dissappointed.

Welcome to dooyoo!

I'm sorry for the low rating, but you give away a fair bit in your (very interesting) relating of the film to the book. People often use this site to decide whether they are going to rent or buy the film, so its good not to spoil it for them by giving away the story!

It might be helpful to you to go and read a couple of the 'Rewarded Reviews' in each of the areas. These are the best reviews on the site and help to give an idea of the type of things that people want to know. That way you can get better and better ratings! You made some interesting points, and I'd really love to know more!

If you should rewrite this, please ask me to rerate!
