Advantages: good actor,
Disadvantages: predictable, took a while to get interesting
I watch a film every week it seems just to pass those few hours of boredom I sometimes have or to distract myself from the pile of work I usually have. I tried to find a film which didn’t look too stupid or too intense and I decided to go for Captivity. I had seen a lot of adverts for it over the summer and it looked like a bit of a horror but not too gory which is what I wanted. I had never seen a trailer though so wasn’t exactly sure what to expect but I was soon to find out.
The film starts out with us seeing someone being tortured and a lot of tubes, they then fill up with blood and I soon realised that this was probably going to be an intense film after all. While watching I watched the first half one day and the second half another day because I wasn’t in the mood to keep watching it all. We then see some hands covered in gloves cutting up paper and making a collage almost of letters and pictures. It all seems a bit strange but then we see videos being played of a blonde woman on the screen, it’s like interview tapes and we soon find out that this is the model Jennifer Tree (Elisha Cuthbert). The person seems a bit obsessed with her.
Jennifer is a model and is soon captured by this obsesee and drugged at a party where she later wakes up to find what she thinks is a nice room as she is in what she knows as her own bed but the window scene is of a sunny beach. As she walks over she soon hears a crackle and the image fades away and she realises it has just been a film reel displaying this scene. She soon wonders where she is and realising she is being kept prisoner but she doesn’t know how she got here, why she is here and she seems to be alone. After a long time of looking around trying to work things out she finally meets someone else in the same position who has also been captured, his name is Gary (Daniel Gillies).
The film pretty much kicks off from here as both of them try to find a way to get out of here and try to find out why they have been captured. I did like this film in the end but feel it was a bit slow to start with and it did lose my concentration quickly. I didn’t find it interesting but then as it went on I found the film a bit predictable and knew where it was headed and I was right about the ending. It’s not the most original film ever it’s been done before it is a similar idea to Saw but less gory really.
The acting in the film was ok but nothing amazing. Elisha Cuthbert is the main actress who you will know from 24 and she was also in ‘The Girl Next Door’ which wasn’t good and ‘House Of Wax’ another horror film but I did actually like it. I find it hard to see her adapt to different characters as she always seems to be the same sort of character.
Daniel Gillies I hadn’t heard of before but he did look familiar is also good in the part of Gary, I haven’t seen him in anything else to compare him to say he played the part well but he was good from what I saw in this film.
Captivity can be purchased on DVD from Amazon at £11.48 which is quite expensive or on Play.com for £10.99 with free delivery but I’m sure it’ll come down in price or you could always buy yourself a cheaper copy on eBay.
The film lasts approximately 96 minutes so it isn’t too long at least and it is an 18 certificate I’d say this was mainly for violence. If you want more information on the film you can go to the official website at http://www.captivitythemovie.com/ and watch the trailer and so on.
