After BONFIRE OF THE VANITIES and RAISING CAIN director Brian De Palmer needed to make a movie of the kind we all know he does best.
CARLITO'S WAY is that movie.......

Al Pacino (carlito briganti) is a latino gangster and with the help of his lawyer Sean Penn (david klienfeld) gets off a lengthy prison sentence on a legal technicality.
Opon this stroke of good fortune Carlito pronounces to the world that this time he's going straight.

Ofcourse as we all suspect as soon as he hit's the street's it all goes abit "Pete Tong".

The story twists and turns as Carlito's worst fears start to decend upon him with unstopable ease.
All the shady mobsters he knew before come back to haunt him and it's safe to say the "code of thieves" has gone crashing out the window.
If this wasn't enough he has to contend with an up and comeing gangster more phycotic than the nutters that came before named Billy Blanco from the Bronx (John Leguizamo) ...this is a fantastic role and De Palmer has to be praised for choseing an unknowen for this part...i'm pleased to say Leguizamo's performance is one of the highlights of the film.

With all this on his plate the last thing Carlito needs is his friend and lawyer Sean Penn to double-cross him and leave him "high and dry" but yes people you've guessed it he certainly does!

All in all this is a pacey thriller with blistering performances by one and all....my only gripe is the sub-plot love story going on...why? why? why?...This movie just did'nt need it, It just slowed the story down and to be honest who gives a shit!

Highlights ....just has to be the two main action set peices...the pool hall and grand central station.
Alot of critics say De Palmer's action sceanes are too stylish, this may be true .....but at the end of the day we all pay our hard earned money...so don't we deserve to be ente
rtained?

The soundtrack is pure disco man!...you will gasp at all those jazzy shirts and skin tight pants, Maybe it will take you back when you strutted you stuff...A great mix of latino and disco are on offer here, Certainly takes you to the streets of 70's New York.

Not De Palmer's best film (SCARFACE)..but still head and shoulders above most of the offering's out there.
