Carrie (DVD) ... Laurie ... / DVD released 29 September, 1998 at MGM / Features of the DVD: Closed-captioned, Colour, DVD-Video, Letterboxed, Widescreen, NTSC / This terrifying adaptation of Stephen King's bestselling horror novel was directed by shock maestro Brian De Palma for maximum, no-holds-barred effect. Sissy Spacek stars as Carrie White, the beleaguered daughter of a religious kook (Piper Laurie) and a social outcast tormented by her cruel, insensitive classmates. When her rage turns into telekinetic powers, however, school's out in every sense of the word. De Palma's horrific climax in a school gym lingers forever in the memory, though the film is also built upon Spacek's remarkable performance and Piper Laurie's outlandishly creepy one. John Travolta has a small part as a thug, De Palma's future wife, Nancy Allen, is his girlfriend, and Amy Irving makes her screen debut as one of the girls giving Carrie a hard time.

This all comes to a head with the impending prom, in which Carrie is shocked to be invited by one of the popular boys at school, unaware that a cruel prank awaits for her. However, they hadn't quite bargained on what happens - Carrie, in an early scene in the film, exhibits that she has some sort of telekinetic, supernatural power, and at ...more

Poor Poor Carrie!! This movie is set in the 1970s, Carrie is a 16 year old girl who doesn't have the best life in the world, infact it's a pretty awful one. She has a crap time at school were the other kids and even some of the teachers bully her and humiliate her, and shes got a crap life at home. Her mother is a psychotic obsessively religious woman who doesn't let Carrie wear the clothes the other kids wear, she wears knee high socks and cardigans. Carries mom locks Carrie in a closet if she feels Carrie is deserving of it. Carrie has a secret though, she is telekinetic, which means she can move things with the power of her mind. One of the ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Carrie (DVD): Hell Hath No Fury (1247 words)

Rating:

When the onset of puberty starts to bring about disturbing physical changes, young Carrie White is ill-prepared. With a deeply religious mother who believes that such changes signal the onset into evil ways, it is not surprising that Carrie is terrified about what is happening to her. When Carrie experiences her first period, her schoolmates torment her viciously, ceasing only when the games mistress, Miss Collins, intervenes. Collins is far from impressed by the girls' cruelty towards Carrie, and implements a series of punishments that leads the group's leader, Chris, to be banned from attending the school Prom later that week. Chris's anger is directed entirely at ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review CARRIE (950 words)

Rating:

This is the film adaptation of the Stephen King novel of the same name. Carrie White (excellently portrayed by Sissy Spacek) is a shy and unassuming schoolgirl who is the brunt of her classmate’s jokes. This is mainly the fault of her overbearingly religious mother Margaret White (Piper Laurie) who preaches the gospel to everyone and everything, including her own daughter. The film begins as Carrie is showering after her gym lesson and she suddenly begins to bleed. Carrie has been taught nothing about puberty by her mother so has no idea that this is her first period and is a completely normal part of growing up. She automatically thinks that she is ...  Read the complete review

Here is one of my Amazon bargains. I think I paid around £5 for it (shop around as you can get it for less if you don't mind it being a second-hand copy). This was one that was ready to watch as soon as I got the parcel through the post but hubby is not a fan of Stephen King so I had to wait till he went away before I could watch it.! In the end, he's been away a month now and I have just gotten round to watching it - better late than never! "Carrie" is the film adaptation of Stephen King's book of the same name, originally published in 1973 (good year that one!). I did previously review the book - anyone who knows me will know that I am a fan of ...  Read the complete review
