Advantages: so many, great performances, haunting story

Disadvantages: nope

Brian depalma's haunting film version of the Stephen King classic is now one of my all time favourites. Nearly every scene chills you to the bone, especially the ones featuring Carrie and her mother.

The story centres on a strange loner in a small town who lives with her obsessively religious mother and is naive about most things in life, such as puberty, which we find out in the disturbing first scene.
Carrie is taunted by her classmates and when the PE teacher, who has taken pity on Carrie punishes all the girls, one plans revenge but another is sorry for Carrie and persuades her boyfriend to ask Carrie to the prom, thereby giving up her right to go. Carrie eventually agrees to go against her mother’s wishes and even makes her own dress. By now we have begun to be introduced to Carrie’s strange telekinetic powers.

At the prom Carrie is actually having a good time and so is her date, who originally did not want to go with her. But the girl who resents Carrie has planned to ruin her night and does so in the most shocking fashion. Carrie is humiliated in front of the whole school and her powers take over. She wrecks havoc over the gymnasium, killing some pupils and then on the walk home kills the girl who was responsible for the prank on Carrie and her boyfriend as they try to run her down. When Carrie gets home she is attacked by her mother who believes her to be the antichrist but manages to use her powers to fend her off and then kills herself and her mother when she loses control of her powers and the house falls down around them.

This movie is shocking and haunting and the actors and actresses all portray their characters brilliantly. Watch out for a bit-part performance by John Travolta.

Highlights: so many, but it has to be the prom scene and when Carrie pins her mother to the wall with knives in exactly the same position as the statue in the cupboard is in. Brilliant!

The movie is an absolute historical classic now, a must see. It was original in concept and has no doubt inspired other directors and film makers. Nice review, glad you didn't mention the ending!
