... ensues! This is a really funny film. Anyone who likes Westerns will know that there are not many comedy attempts at the genre, and for me it is a joy to see the whole carry on crew attack it with a vengeance. Long term fans of the series will appreciate the excellent casting. James is pefect with his gruff style as the bad guy, whilst Kenneth Williams is just hilariously inept as the judge, Judge Burke (nice name). Jim Dale plays the marshal with the mistaken identity, and does a cracking job of it too. In terms...more

Premium Review Carry On Cowboy (DVD): "Carry On Cowboy" (1966) (1198 words)

Rating:

After hitting the Napoleonic high-seas in "Carry On Jack", taking a bash at the British secret service in "Carry On Spying", and giving Richard Burton's toga a good ol' tug in "Carry On Cleo", it seemed any genre was fit for a spoofing from the team of director Gerald Thomas and producer Peter Rogers. In the eleventh entry to the long-running series, the regulars took a stab at the American Western, the 'cowboys & indians' genre as old as cinema itself, pitting a medley of British actors in the thick of high-noon gun fights and bar-room brawls, a chance none of them would want to miss. After all, which crazy ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Is that a gun in your pocket or are you just pleased to see ... (338 words)

Rating:

This 1966 Carry On film took the team out to the Wild West, well in reality they probably never left the English countryside or maybe Spain (like many spaghetti westerns). Whilst not the best Carry On film ever made it was not all bad, unlike other earlier films this one did have some excellent names for the characters so you have Sid James as the appropriately named Rumpo Kid who under an alias leads a gang of cattle rustlers while Kenneth Willaiams is known as Judge Burke a man scared of his own shadow but attempting to enforce the law. Jim Dale had a leading role as a sewage expert whose name is Mrshal P Knutt (geddit) which has him mistaken for the new ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Carry On Cowboy (DVD): You Can't Get A Man With A Gun (599 words)
by - written on 28/10/05 (Very useful, 309 readings)
Rating:

Although not one of the greatest Carry Ons, Cowboy does have the distinct advantage of Jim Dale starring in a good lead role for me to enjoy The small western town of Stodge City is being terrorised by the infamous Rumpo Kid. The beleaguered residents the final straw is when he kills their Sheriff so they send for a replacement. In a comedy standard a mix up occurs and instead of a United States Marshall Stodge’s inhabitants get Marshall P Knutt; Sanitary Engineer. But all is not lost because Annie Oakley is not what she seems at first to be…. This Carry On has a lot the regulars in it. Roguish Sid James leers his way through the part of Johnny ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Carry On in the Wild West (316 words)
by - written on 09/05/09 (Useful, 22 readings)
Rating:

Carry On meets the wild west. Not what you would immediately think would produce a barrels of laughs, and you would probably be right. An okay storyline and very familiar faces make this an 'enjoyable' film. So what's about ? The setting is Stodge City (first of many puns). The locals are all afraid of The Rumpo Kid (played by Sid James). The mayor Judge Burke - played by Kenneth Williams - (who's ancestor married into the Wright family and they all became Wright Burkes - the jokes are nearly all that cheesey), advertises for a new Marshall to run The Rumpo kid out of town - they did alot of that in westerns in those days. Due to a mess ...  Read the complete review
