69. Carry on Emmannuelle (1978) [film only review] I won't pretend to be the biggest fan of the Carry On films, but due to the number of times most were repeated on television throughout the eighties, I must have seen the bulk of the series' 31 films. For me, their strengths came from the self aware and bawdy atmosphere, the word play of puns and mild double entendres, sending up conservative suburban Britain, and the sense of familiarity. The continual theme of sexual innuendo made them a little risqué in the sixties, but come the seventies something changed. With a more permissive society came sex comedies like the Confessions series; the ... Read the complete review

Carry On Emmannuelle was made in 1978 and was the last Carry On film, apart from Carry On Columbus in 1992. Following a tradition of wonderful comedy gems, Carry On Emmannuelle was disappointing. The cast had lost many of its famous names - Sid James had died two years earlier and others decided not to be in this film, for various reasons. The regulars were depleted, leaving only Kenneth Williams, Joan Sims, Jack Douglas, Kenneth Connor and Peter Butterworth from the usual array of star names associated with these films. Unfortunately, even those five could not save this film. The tradition of saucy innuendoes slipped over the abyss ... Read the complete review

I love the Carry on films, sad maybe but true! I thought that over the years I had seen all the films many many times, so I was really surprised recently when, while looking through the bargain bin at Woolworth I found 'Carry On Emmannuelle' for £2.99. I thought I would buy it, as I was intrigued as to why I had never seen it on the television. Then I watched it and found out! It's truly terrible, and that is so sad. It should have been better, it has many of the regular cast members; Kenneth William, Kenneth Connor, Joan Sims, Peter Butterworth and Jack Douglas. It's produced by Peter Rogers and directed by Gerald Thomas. I believe it was the last of ... Read the complete review

This is probably the worst of the Carry On films, made in 1978 it was at a time when the franchise was seriously in decline with many of the top actors no longer either available or willing to appear again. Even the prescence of Kenneth Wiliams and Joan Sims could not save this disaster of a movie which looked to cash in on the soft porn Emmannuelle films of the same era. Suzzanne Danielle played the sex crazy Emmannuelle Prevert (great name though) who is the bored wife of Emile Prevert (Williams). For some reason while she is able to attract the attetions of pretty much any member of the male sex she has no such attraction from her husband and thus goes off ... Read the complete review

This Carry On film is the last in the series, dating from 1978. It is widely regarded as a huge flop, but in my own mind it's not half bad. It tells the story of Emanuelle Prevert, a woman who wants her husband to want to sleep with her, and so embarks on a string of high profile affairs to try and make him jealous. One of the interesting things about this film is the nudity - there are breasts flashed and bums galore, which is really taking the risque nature of these films too far. All of a sudden it's no longer risque, but down-right rude. Now, there's nothing wrong with that in many people's minds, but for me it's kind of defeating the point of what is ...
