Carry On Henry (DVD) ... released 07 July, 2003 at ITV DVD / Features of the DVD: PAL, Special Edition / Shot in the bright postal colours of a seaside postcard, 1971's Carry On Henry applies the usual Carry On sniggering to the married life of Henry VIII. Talbot Rothwell's script is standard bedroom farce and full of jokes about choppers, while the threat of beheading and the actuality of torture are constantly present but only as the terrible things that happen to cartoon characters who will be back next time. Sid James turns in one of his better performances as the endlessly lecherous and fickle Henry, married to Joan Sims and lusting after Barbara Windsor. There is a genuine sexual chemistry between James and Windsor, which at times almost breaks open the farce formula. The usual regulars--Kenneth Williams as Thomas Cromwell, Terry Scott as Cardinal Wolsey, Charles Hawtrey as Sir Roger--do their usual turns; Williams is more subdued than usual, while Hawtrey hugely enjoys playing the Queen's secret lover. This was not one of the high points of the series, but it has its own curious charm. --Roz Kaveney

... certainly the best in the carry on crew for the role. His masculinity and brash personality makes him the ideal candidate, although I can't help but feel it would be dead funny to cast Kenneth Williams in the role. This is one of the carry on films that bases its action on historical events, and as such you need to know a bit about the history. It's almost enough to know that Henry was a dirty dog who went around sleeping with a ton of women and killing them when he got bored, but a little more in depth knowledge ab...more

Premium Review Carry On Henry (DVD): A man and his big Chopper (282 words)
by - written on 21/01/08 (Useful, 61 readings)
Rating:

The Carry On films did occasionally like to use history as the source for their story lines and this particular 1971 film based its plot on the search by Henry VIII for an heir to the throne which resulted in the beheading of a number of wives. All of the usual Carry On crowd appear in this historical romp with Sid James taking the lead role of Henry with Terry Scott and Kenneth Williams his two royal advisers. The film opens with Henry rushing from the beheading of his wife straight into a wedding ceremony with a French Princess played by Joan Simms. Unfortunately her love of garlic does not play well with Henry as he fails to consumate the wedding and then ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Probably the best of the Carry On Series made in the 1970s (297 words)

Carry on Henry was the 21st in the famous Carry on series and one of the most historical visual of the series. It stars the familar cast of Sid James, Kenneth Williams, Barbara Windsor and many of the other regulars. The film is based, albeit very loosely, on King Henry VIII and his reputation for having many wives. The film had the highest budget to date of any in the series, but this was still just under a quarter of a million pounds, much less than other films of the time. The film is similar to the others in the series, coarse visual humour, one-line jokes and some very dubious historical detail. It is however one of my favourites in the series, ...  Read the complete review

or: "Mind My Chopper!" "After six months of married life, the only thing I'm having off is her head!" With his most recent wife (Patsy Rowlands) sent to the axeman, King Henry VIII (Sid James) is free to marry again, so he runs from the execution and into the church to tie the knot with King of France's cousin Marie of Normandy (Joan Sims). However, as Henry puts on all of his charm and draws closer, about to consumate the marriage, he is over-powered by his new wife's love of garlic, a habit she refuses to give up! Now it's up to Thomas Cromwell (Kenneth Williams) and Cardinal Wolsey (Terry Scott) to secure ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review King Henry VIII at his best!!! (636 words)

Introduction ========== There is nothing like a good Carry On either on a Sunday afternoon or over a Bank Holiday weekend. This has to be one of my favourites from the Carry On films because it is taking history and making it funny that appeals to most ages. The Plot ======= We begin the film by watching the be-heading of one of his wives and just as she has the chop, Henry runs off to the chapel to marry his next one, Marie. As Henry is about to bed his new queen, he gets a good whiff of Garlic, that soon turns off his fancy and in true Monarchy fashion goes off hunting for young girls. Unhappy with his ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Carry On Henry (DVD): Henry the 8th would love carry on (274 words)

Carry on Henry is a 1971 release from the British comedy team that specialises in historical spoofs with an innuendo ridden plot and whacky, bizarre sense of humour. This film is all about Henry the 8th, and his lustuous desire for women. When his latest wife won't stop eating garlic, thus pushing him away from attraction to her, he must get rid of her in th usual way. Sid James plays the role of Henry, and is certainly the best in the carry on crew for the role. His masculinity and brash personality makes him the ideal candidate, although I can't help but feel it would be dead funny to cast Kenneth Williams in the role.
