Casanova (DVD) ... ... / DVD released 19 June, 2006 at Buena Vista Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Dubbed, PAL, Widescreen / A light farce dressed up as a lush 18th century costume drama, Casanova gives a fictional spin to the exploits of history's most rakish seducer of women. As played by Heath Ledger, this Casanova bears no resemblance to Donald Sutherland's unrepentant portrayal in Fellini's Casanova, filmed 30 years earlier. Instead, the great ladies' man of Venice is just biding time by bedding women, waiting for true love (and the return his long-absent mother) to settle down into blissful monogamy. He finds true love in Francesca (Sienna Miller), a feminist who initially resists Casanova's affections while director Lasse Hallström serves up a variety of lightweight subplots including Casanova's flight from the Vatican's inquisitor (Jeremy Irons); a host of mistaken identities involving, among others, the portly "Lard King of Genoa" (played with scene-stealing perfection by Oliver Platt in a blubbery fat suit); and the romantic negotiations of Francesca's mother (played by Hallström's wife, Lena Olin) and a young bumbler named Giovanni with his own promising future as a lover of women. It all adds up to a good-looking and harmless diversion that barely warrants an R-rating, and it makes a fine double-bill with the more enjoyable Dangerous Beauty, another Venetian lover's tale that was also blessed by the presence of Platt, who gives this Casanova the majority of its entertainment value. --Jeff Shannon

... the unattainable catch Casanovas yearns for. In a plot that confuses, with noms de plume, alter egos and too many people pretending to be someone they're not, the film tries to be too clever, and winds up over-complicating something that is, in essence, rather simple. Ledger's Casanova is rather wet at times, and despite some clever acting from him, the character doesn't really get much to bite his teeth into. Sienna Miller as Bruni is okay, but stays plain throughout and doesn't star in any way. Oliver Platt and Jere...more

Crowned Review Casanova (DVD): A Heady Comedy (film review only) (964 words)

Rating:

Casanova is a man who loves to love women. He is sure that women are meant for pleasure, and pleasure alone, and that seems to make him happy. That is, until he meets Francesca Bruni - a woman who has a different idea about the true meaning of love, and isn't willing to be subservient or just a sex object. Casanova is intrigued and finds pursuing her can't be done in his usual manner. Unfortunately, she's betrothed to another, and Casanova is being pursued by the Church, who is forcing him to find a wife to save himself - hopefully one that will help him financially as well. If the story of the "world's greatest lover" isn't excellent fodder for ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review This failed to seduce me (522 words)

Rating:

Casanova is a rather lacklustre film that features the man of the title, in a partially true tale about love and lust. Sadly, the love and lust are rather glossy and the acting and direction a bit lacking. Heath Ledger turned in a number of fine performances before his death, but this 2005 role as the renowned seducer Casanova was not one fo his finest. The story takes a bit of a challenging turn as he finds he has met his match in not just another person when it comes to love, but a woman. Set a couple of hundred years ago, in Venice, it was a time where women served the men, and roles such as lawyers were not fit for women. Along comes Francesca ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Casanova (DVD): ~ Lies told, Virtue lost and Love found ~ (2410 words)

~ Lies told, Virtue lost and Love found ~ Casanova was released in 2006 in the UK and I've only just watched it. When it first came out was really wanted to see it and must have forgotten all about it until the other week when I added it to my list on Lovefilm. I watched a trailer of the film online which made me add it to my list. I am a huge fan of Heath Ledger and I quite like films that are from a certain era. The trailer looked really good to me and this is a sort of film my mum also likes which gives me a boosting in winning over the TV downstairs. To be honest I didn't know much about the film before I had watched it, I knew roughly what it was ...  Read the complete review

Bastardisation! There is nothing more than the men in grey suits in Hollywoodland like to do than bastardise history. Imagine a group of closed door policy, gun loving Americans getting their hands on your beautiful history. They’re not intent on swapping and ruining their own past (as they have so little) so they have to make do with ours. Who can forget massive historical inaccuracies that were ‘Braveheart’, ‘U-571’ or even ‘Saving Private Ryan’? Each of these films managed to somehow change the events of the past ‘Sound of Thunder’ style (please see ‘obscure sci-fi films from 2006’ reference book for details). What annoys me the most is that to the majority of ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Casanova (DVD): If You Want Rampant Sex Go Elsewhere! (346 words)
by - written on 26/04/08 (Very useful, 96 readings)
Rating:

Pretty film! Frothy, light and entertaining. Historical epic it is not. You get some romance, some nice scenery, good music, and a bit of sex but that's all. This does get a bit risque in parts but not too much so, although I thought this one was a bit too sexy for the certificate 12A it was awarded. I wouldn't allow 12 year olds to watch this. (Too much information!) We do see quite a lot of Oliver Platt as Papprizzio. It's Venice, 1753, and the rampant Giacomo Casanova is destined to get his wings clipped by finding a bride. (As if that would work!) As soon he commits himself to a suitable virgin, he falls madly and ...  Read the complete review
