Advantages: Amusing, light, relaxing film.

Disadvantages: Not suitable for aged 12 as in the certificate.

Pretty film! Frothy, light and entertaining. Historical epic it is not. You get some romance, some nice scenery, good music, and a bit of sex but that's all.

This does get a bit risque in parts but not too much so, although I thought this one was a bit too sexy for the certificate 12A it was awarded. I wouldn't allow 12 year olds to watch this. (Too much information!)

We do see quite a lot of Oliver Platt as Papprizzio.

It's Venice, 1753, and the rampant Giacomo Casanova is destined to get his wings clipped by finding a bride. (As if that would work!)

As soon he commits himself to a suitable virgin, he falls madly and passionately in love ( or lust) with Francesca Bruni. Francesca is engaged to a wealthy Genoese merchant and apart from that she doesn't fancy getting tangled up with a rake like Casanova.

The dialogue is sharp and witty here and things move quite quickly. There are some stunning camera shots of glorious scenery and the musical score is bright and sparkling (Corelli, Rameau, Albinoni.)

Jeremy Irons plays a good semi comic role as Bishop Pacci and heroine Sienna Miller does a great job.

This film got a lot of criticism when it was first released for its deviation from historical fact and semi serious take on the life of Casanova but it is intensely watchable inspite of this. There were also those who complained about its lack of raunchy bits.

It's funny in parts and very enjoyable. I would certainly recommend it to adults and older teenagers.

I think I prefer the David Tennant version!

Yes, I edited it and didn't delete that bit. There isn't enough romance to mention it twice!
