Premium Review Cass (DVD): Middling hooligan film (284 words)
by - written on 27/10/09 (Very useful, 6 readings)
Rating:

British cinema has recently had a good habit of tackling contemporary British social issues; Green Street looked at football hooligans, and then films like This is England looked at parental abandonment and lost innocence. Cass is the latest to come along, a crime drama bout Cass Pennant, the former football hooligan, who was raised by an elderly white family in a very middle class, very middle-minded, and rather racist town, where he had to endure endless insults and even assaults. However, it is through the violence inflicted on him that he found a way to feel complete and to feel vital, through committing his own acts of violence, and through becoming ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Cassius Clay (441 words)
by - written on 08/10/09 (Very useful, 8 readings)
Rating:

I was at blockbuster and looking for a decent film to watch. I don't know about everyone else but it just seems that there is so much rubbish out there at the moment and nothing to get involved with. Especially when it comes to the football hooligan and English gangster films. Don't get me wrong 'Football Factory' "rise of the foot soldier" and 'The Business' all were really enjoyable adrenaline pumping lads films which I really enjoyed especially when with my friends as you really get involved with the grittiness of your home town and the realism that is the violence that you can and often are subject to. All these films I DO really ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Cass (DVD): The hardest fight is knowing who you are (566 words)

Rating:

(Film only review) Introduction I am quite a big football fan but not so much the violent side of it .There have been quite a few films in recent years that have covered football hooliganism and violence. It is definitely an ugly side of the game that was mainly present back in the 1970's and 80's. This film is based on the true story of one of the most notorious hooligans who was involved with the Inter City Firm (ICF) which was a group of hooligans associated with West Ham Football Club. His name was Cass Pennant. The film was not a major box office hit such as with Green Street which had its hollywood appeal with Elijah Wood. Instead it's a ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review A refreshing change to the hooligan scene (259 words)
by - written on 06/10/09 (Very useful, 22 readings)
Rating:

Out of all the hooligans surrounding the ICF - West Ham's notorious firm, I would say that Cass is probably the most sentimental and at times also violent one. Based on a true story, of gang leader Cass - said to be the only black boy in his area at the time who faced constant harassments during his youth due to his colour and having the name Carol, a big lad - he soon chose to use the name Cass, after Cassius Clay and found that the usual boundaries were broken as a West Ham fans. There's one notorious scene where the leader of the gang, headbuts another hooligan claiming that Cass is not a "nig-nog" but "West Ham", he rises through the ...  Read the complete review
