Film Only Review:
Chuck Noland (Tom Hanks) plays a FedEx executive committed to his job which takes him traveling worldwide solving productivity problems for the company. Happy in a relationship with a student called Kelly (Helen Hunt) we are introduced to his very busy lifestyle and his relationship with her at a Christmas meal with family and shown how happy they are. However their Christmas is interrupted when there is a problem for the company in Malaysia and off he goes plane bound.
However there is a bad thunderstorm on the way and the plane crashes into the South Pacific but Chuck survives after grabbing a life boat and travels through terrential rain and storm and lands up on an island....castaway and with no one knowing he has survived. Quickly realising that there are no other inhabitants on the island he has to learn a new way of life. With no contact with the outside world, food to eat, clothing or people to talk to he has to learn ways of surviving and fast.
Luckily some Fed Ex parcels from the aircraft turn up on the beach, along with a corpse of someone else who was on the plane and there are then materials that can be used. One of the items is a Wilson branded football to who becomes the lonely mans mate and who he has regular conversations with (and arguments lol) and the other thing for company is a fob watch Kelly gave him with her photograph in it for Christmas.
Years pass by and the questions posed are will he survive and can he learn the skills to, will he be found or will he be his own rescuer and what if he did survive..... where is Kelly and what is she doing now? Years have past life and people move on after on with their lives after-all!
The film for me was really slow gong. Of course though with one man pretty much acting his way through 3/4 of the movie it had no choice to be and I can't say Tom Hanks wasn't good in it cos he was and this was probably the best film he's ever been in (no that I'm a huge fan of his!). The special effects were very good, the music unmemorable though and the scenery was amazing and in fact I would have like to have been shown a little more of that.
However I kept nodding off it was so slow and oddly enough the parts with Helen Hunt who played Kelly I found particularly boring. She isn't an actress I ever enjoy watching anyway and for me shes really wooden.
However I did enjoy the ending of the film which I found sad and heartfelt which to me shows the cross roads of life and that we never know what the future may hold for us!
The film lasted 143 minutes which for me and my mate personally felt was a little too long for us and it has a 12 rating which seems right to me just because there is blood in the film from where he gets injured!
Summary: An ok film but one to rent and not buy in my opinion!
