Hanks on the way to Oscar (Castaway (DVD))
Member Name: jmreyes
Advantages: Great actor's work Disadvantages: Time lag
This Dreamworks film by Robert Zemeckis tells us in a brilliant way a story of survival instinct and how it helps to go through the hardest times. It gives little importance to events outside Chuck’s (masterly played by Tom Hanks) own inner world. It’s a hard role for Tom Hanks, as the story lies on him, to show the feelings and thoughts of aperson left alone in silence and isolation. For this role, Tom Hanks had to put on around ten kilograms, shot his first stage at the island, and then loose around 30 kilograms during a year to get the look of a cast away for the rest of the film. This role has awarded Tom Hanks a Golden Globe, and tracks him on the way to this third Oscar.Chuck Noland works for FedEx, one of the largest mail companies in the world. His job is supervise that FedEx keeps its quality standard around it different offices in the world. As he is most of the away, his relationship with his girlfriend Kelly comes through difficulties, so he arranges it to spend Christmas with her. But he has to make an emergency flight to Malaysia for four days. What seemed to be one of many tasks, ended in the plane crashing into a desert island in the middle of the Pacific, with Chuck as the only survivor. Time passes, and he has to survive, alone, fighting with loneliness and the loss of hope in being rescued.Helen Hunt, who doesn’t really have much space for showing her work, plays the role of his girlfriend, always shadowed by the great work of Hanks. The only weakness that could be found in the script is the great time lag between his first days in the island and the rest of the film.
