In terms of 'old films' (this one being 1958), this is my absolute favourite ever. The acting from Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor is just divine: so subtle and brooding, it raises the bar in character acting, and hasn't been surpassed since. 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof' is a play written by American playwright Tennesse Williams, and published in 1955. It tells the story of a dysfunctional family headed up by patriarch Big Daddy, who has cancer (but doesn't know it). The age of the Hollywood legend appears to be coming to an end. In the Golden Age of cinema there were many actors and actresses who would fill up the Cineplex's no matter the film; Chaplin, Brando, Hepburn, the list goes on. Nowadays the equivalent list is so short as to be worthless - Will Smith. Every other actor who sports the moniker of modern legend is lying; Cruise is a perhaps although recently not so much, the same can be said for Roberts. Don't even mention the likes of Pitt, Jolie and Clooney whose glossy magazine column inches are far superior to box office clout. Elizabeth Taylor is at her womanly best, as Maggie (the cat on a hot tin roof)...she is very beautiful but past her girlie stage, and her screen pressence is quite breathtaking. Paul Newman is so handsome, it ought to be illegal! This film, based on a Tennessee Williams story, is set in the deep South of America. A family gathers to hear if Big Daddy (the family Patriach), played by Burl Ives, is really dying...and if he is...who gets his power and money... The steamy Southern setting is beautifully portrayed on screen...you can feel the heat and humidity as clearly as the characters do.... The supporting actors are as impressive as ...
