This was one of the first Catherine Cookson books to be turned in to a series and was filmed in 1979. There are many actors who have gone on to have sucessful careers since - John Duttine, Juliet Stevenson, Anne Reid and Caroline Blakiston to name a few. This series combines all the Mallen books - The Mallen Streak, The Mallen Girl and The Mallen Litter, but is not totally faithful to the books. However it is still an enjoyable series. It does perhaps have a slightly dated feel to the filming, as was acceptable to be screened then was much more reserved than today and the books are a lot more graphic than the series.
