Charlotte's Web (DVD) ... / DVD released 28 May, 2007 at Paramount Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: PAL / E.B. White's classic tale gets a Babe-like makeover in Charlotte's Web, a delightful and well-made film that is sure to become a family classic. Directed by Gary Winick (13 Going on 30), the new version eschews the musical numbers of the 1973 cartoon and mixes CGI with live-action animals. Dakota Fanning brings the right amount of chutzpah to Fern, the young farm girl who rescues a runt, Wilbur, from death and visits him every day at her Uncle Homer's farm. But it's Wilbur's friendship with Charlotte the spider (voiced by Julia Roberts) that ultimately saves him from the "smoke house" (a kid-friendly alternative term to the slaughterhouse), for Charlotte's talent for weaving praiseworthy words about Wilbur into her web turns the Zuckerman farm into a tourist attraction. The more tragic elements of the book are handled sensitively by Winick, working from a script by Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich), and Roberts' soothing, maternal voice (who knew it would work so well?) makes it all go down easy. It turns out to be just one of many perfect celebrity voice-casting choices, for the farm animals, voiced by an all-star cast including Oprah Winfrey (the goose), Robert Redford (the horse), Steve Buscemi (Templeton the rat), and John Cleese (the sheep), lend plenty of sharp humour. But it's two corn-hungry crows, voiced by Thomas Haden Church (Sideways) and OutKast's Andre "3000" Benjamin who steal the show. -- Ellen A. Kim

... in places so really the effectiveness of the voice-over was great and a very highly successful touch. The characterisation of a naïve, immature pig makes Wilbur very lovable, I giggled at some of his quotes and can imagine kids loving him as I did. The other animals such as the Betsy farting cow, Templeton the Rat and the sheep to had the urge to 'follow' everyone else were all amazing. They all made the film funny and added to the humour and to my overall high opinion of the film. In addition to the animal charac...more

Crowned Review Charlotte's Web (DVD): A web of friendship and love (2634 words)

I love animals; I carried out my year 10 work experience in a veterinary surgery, but decided it wasn't for me when the staff tried to comfort me after a puppy died...I cried for over an hour. I am one of those weird people who would much rather give my money to an animal charity than a human charity. I trust animals more than I trust most humans. I know that they will not tell my secrets to others, tell me I am getting fat or that I can't do this or that properly. In a way I could be compared a lot to Fern in the film. When I saw this film advertised in the cinema I knew it was going to be a sad one. As a child at school we did a project on E.B ...

This film is based on the classic children’s book by E.B.White. I cannot say how closely this adaptation is to the original book, as, though it is stated as a classic, it seems to have completely passed me by during my life so far. I had absolutely no recollection of the story at all so I approached this film with completely fresh eyes and no preconceived ideas as to the story. The introduction to the story shows how a pig is saved from early slaughter just after it was born. As the runt of the litter, the farmer was going to kill it until his daughter, Fern, wakes up in time to say she will look after it instead. The whole film from then on is structured ...

Charlotte’s Web Charlotte’s Web was firstly a book written by E. B. White and this is one book I can remember reading and re-reading over and over again when I was younger. I enjoyed it so much as the characters were brought to life by the author and I was ecstatic when the cartoon film came out for me to enjoy as well. Now many years later they have made it in to a motion picture and it has been recently released out on to DVD this week. Seeing as the weather has been so bad I sent out my boyfriend to pick this DVD up while he spent the day at a friends so I could watch it uninterrupted on my own. Watching ...
