Advantages: DVD means can watch over and over again
Disadvantages: No real extras included on DVDs . No talks with cast, etc. No cover - bought 2nd hand
I have recently purchased the Charmed Series 2 DVD box set off eBay.
My purchase was an item that I had wanted for a very long time, but had put off buying because when it came out it was so expensive - £39.99 for six DVDS. However, you can now get it in the shops for about £19.99 or cheaper if you are really lucky.
However on eBay it can be really cheap to get a slightly used copy. I got mine for under £10, and the seller threw in Series 2 as the cover was missing!
Anyway to get back to the actual DVD's - Charmed is a series about 3 ordinary sisters called Halliwell, who wake up one day to discover that they are actually witches! Good ones, of course. This second TV series takes you through their next set of exploits and adventures. This series was originally on Channel 4 and moved to Channel 5.
Shannen Doherty (from Beverley Hills 90210) stars as Pru, and she has two sisters Piper (Holly Marie Combs) and Phoebe (Alyssa Milano - who also has edited/directed some of the series). There are several regular stars, particularly Andy and his cop partner Darrell.
In addition, there are several guest stars who play ghosts, devils/demons, and other unusual mythical creatures. You also get "innocents" who the 3 sisters have to protect from the "evil" doers, by invoking the Power of Three. One can freeze time (PIper) and people, one can move things (Pru) and the other has the power to see the future or sometimes past events (Phoebe). You also see how these powers can be mis-used in some episodes.
The 3 sisters start to understand and use their magical powers and eventually enhance them as the second series progresses. Each episode has humour, suspense and a supernatural type adventure. Original episodes were shown from October 7 1998 (first series), but transferring them to DVD they have lost none of their magic - no pun intended.
As the cover is missing from this particular purchase, so is the list of episode titles, so I am unable to list my favourite episode (without going through each DVD again to find it). Each DVD has an appropriate Charmed picture on it, such as The Book of Shadows (their spell book), a picture of Phoebe, Pru, Piper or all 3 together, which makes it more enjoyable to use.
Many characters, such as Andy, who are killed come back as ghosts and there are often flashbacks to previous episodes. In addition, the three sisters can also go forward into the future or back in time due to spells or other occurrences. This means that previously dead characters are seen again in a different context but the 3 sisters know what has occurred and sometimes try to warn them of their fate.
Unfortunately there are no extras and none of the DVD's have a list of the episode names, so if as in this case the sheets are missing, you can not easily find the episode you want quickly, without going into each DVD, which is a shame.
I really enjoy watching this series, and am now eagerly looking out for Series 3 to purchase, as I would like to buy all 8 series.
This series DVD is a rating 12 - because it contains moderate threat, violence and supernatural horror.
Summary: Great second series of Charmed, a TV series, which converts well to DVD.

- 01/09/08 I only saw the show once, and was astounded at the plot holes (seriously, really obvious stuff). |
