Advantages: Critically acclaimed as Kevin Smiths finest work, proves a good movie can be made on the cheap

Disadvantages: The dialogue will turn off some conservatives for sure

Chasing Amy is a 1997 Romantic Comedy film directed by and briefly starring Kevin Smith, its the third movie in the "ViewAskewniverse" an focuses on two comic book artists, Holden and Alyssa.

------------------------------------------------- ----------------------

The Plot: ( Warning Spoilers )

Holden McNeill ( Ben Affleck ) and Banky Edwards ( Jason Lee ) are comic book artists and childhood friends, they attend a Comic Book convention in New York to promote their Comic " Bluntman and Chronic " ( Based on Jay and Silent Bob , Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes respectively ) , while at the convention Holden meets Alyssa Jones ( Joey Lauren Adams ) and instantly is attracted to her, but soon learns she is a lesbian.

The Two begin hanging out as friends and a deep friendship develops, Banky however doesn't like or trust Alyssa and believes she'll be the catalyst for the friendship ending and the ending of their successful partnership, also he believes Holden can't simply keep the relationship platonic, which is true and one night Holden confesses his love for Alyssa, at first she rejects him but they soon begin a heterosexual relationship.

After Banky digs up some dirt on Alyssa's past and ends up causing even more tension between the two Holden finds himself at a crossroads in his relationship and the rest of the movie follows Holden's tasks of keeping his friendship with Banky together and also his relationship with Alyssa.

------------------------------------------------- --------------

To date this is Kevin Smiths most critically acclaimed movie yet, and I can see why, the casting of Affleck and Adams is perfect as they do seem to genuinely have a chemistry and Affleck in particular gives a great performance ( I truly feel that Ben Afflecks best work has been when Kevin Smith has been behind the camera ).

As with all of Kevin Smith's movies its not particularly well shot, Smith doesn't by his own admission have a style that makes you instantly know you're watching a Kevin Smith movie, however its his dialogue that is the key to his movies, Smith writes fantastic humourous and natural dialogue that interspersed with touching and real moments, along with base toilet humour and crude gags, means the educated viewer can recognize a Smith movie without ever opening their eyes, and their lies his genius I believe.

Chasing Amy has a great storyline ( That whether you believe a Lesbian can be turned like that or not ) which really sucks you in and makes you believe the relationship on screen, at 113 minutes it doesn't run too long and with a budget of only $250,000 was a bargain for Miramax, it may still stand up as his finest work yet !

Summary: Essential for any Kevin Smith fan
