Stephen Frears really has a feeling for the baroque, as he has proven with films like Dangerous Liaisons and The Queen; in contrasting these two films in particular, he proves that he can handle both sordid, overt sexiness, and also more serious drama. In a melding of the two, we have Cheri, a film that isn't entirely satisfying, but is certainly quite charming and well performed by its lead. It is an adaptation from the 1920s novel of the same name by Colette.
